Technology Industrial Placement
Our 12-month placement gives you a valuable first look at what it’s like to work here, with real responsibility and accountability. We’re looking for undergraduates to join our Technology Industrial Placement in either Security and Resilience, Data and Analytics, Software Engineering or Product Design.
You’ll receive upfront training with a focus on specific core tech skills and individual projects. You will also receive soft skills training to ensure you develop a rounded skillset. You will receive an individual learning pathway when you join your teams to ensure you are able to continuously develop your skills.
We view our Technology Industrial Placement as a potential feed into our Accelerator Technology Development Programme so if you want further development and a career after university this is a good place to start. Following successful completion of your placement, and with the right drive and attitude, there is the opportunity to progress into Accelerator roles.
What you’ll be doing
Our Technology Industrial Placements will start on the 3rd September 2024. You’ll be asked to select the job role which interests you most when you apply.
You could choose from:
Security & Resilience where you’ll be at the forefront of safeguarding our customers' interests by ensuring the security of our members' funds and data, helping us to bolster product and service security.
Data & Analytics where using technologies such as MS SQL, Teradata, MS Azure and SAAS you’ll help us transform data into valuable insight, conduct data modelling as well as work with AI technologies all to enrich our customers’ experience.
Software Engineering where you’ll get hands on using technologies such as Python, JavaScript, AWS & React. You’ll work on a range of projects developing and/or testing new features to support us enhancing our current customer offering.
Product Design where you will be thinking creatively about transforming customer journeys into user centric design. You’ll become familiar with design and research and how that plays into the product lifecycle.
About you
We’re looking for people who want to develop a career in IT and have the passion and determination to grow and learn. We’re interested in your ability to shape your own career.
We don’t ask for you to be studying towards a certain degree subject for our Industrial Placements. However, you must be at university and looking to complete this placement as part of your degree, returning to university for your final year once this placement is completed.
You’ll be using your communication skills to build strong and lasting working relationships. You’ll be a quick learner, inquisitive, always focused on solutions and have the tenacity to bring them to life.
You’ll thrive in this Industrial Placement if you have:
- Studied for a STEM subject (Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths or Design)
- A keen interest in computer science, cyber and/or information systems, software engineering, product design, design research and/or digital solutions
- Drive to learn and improve and are looking for a challenge
- A positive, tenacious and solution focused mindset
- Have the ability to build and maintain strong working relationships and have the resilience to adapt to change.
Our Customer First behaviours are all about putting customers and members at the heart of how we work together. You can strengthen your application by showing the behaviours that resonate with you, and how you might have already demonstrated these.
- Say it straight - This is about being honest and direct with good intent and saying what needs to be said in the room. It’s also about being clear, precise, and using language that we and, importantly, our customers and members can understand.
- Push for better - This is about aiming high and constantly looking for better in how we work together and serve our customers and members.
- Get it done - This is about prioritising what will have the greatest impact, being decisive and taking accountability for delivering on the end-to-end outcome.

About Nationwide
Nationwide is the world’s largest building society. With over 15 million customers, we have a relationship with almost a quarter of the UK’s population. We’ve got the scale to compete with the big banks, but we’re not a bank.
As a building society, we’re owned by our members – that’s our customers who have their current account, mortgage or savings with us. It means we can do things differently to deliver our Purpose – Banking – but fairer, more rewarding, and for the good of society.
When you work at Nationwide, you can experience that difference for yourself. You’ll be part of a high-performing, purpose-driven organisation that offers rewarding career experiences and a highly competitive range of benefits to match. You’ll also be joining us at an important time as we seek to reach more and more people in the UK. We want everyone in the UK to know that they don’t have to bank with a bank. They can choose a modern mutual instead.
At Nationwide, we have adopted a hybrid working model to benefit from collaborating with colleagues in person, as well as providing the flexibility of working from home. There is an expectation for those who join this programme to meet up as a team at least once per month, as set by the business area. For our Security and Resilience, Data and Analytics roles this will mean coming to our Swindon office, with a few roles also based out of our London office. For Software Engineering or Product Design this will mean coming to our London office and possibly our Swindon office from time to time. As we are a UK-wide Society, we have the advantage of recruiting where the talent is, therefore for individuals that are based outside of these two locations, Nationwide will support travel expenses.
- Nationwide House, Pipers Way, Swindon SN3 1TX
- Nationwide, 1 Threadneedle Street, London EC2R 8HP
