Health Equity Hackathon – What is it?

The event will give those selected to participate the opportunity to get a deeper insight and the opportunity to hear from subject matter experts, contribute ideas towards a critical business objective and has the potential to have a real impact on people’s lives.

On the day, you will be placed into a team of fellow students and tasked with exploring the subject of improving ethnic health equity. You will work together to create and propose solutions to this business case that you will then present to a panel of our senior leaders.

All participants selected to attend will be given the opportunity to participate in additional exclusive career building opportunities organised by MSD & Lilly following the event. Additionally, participants will also have the opportunity to have their 2022 student/industrial placement applications fast tracked. More details of how this process will work at each respective organisation will be given to participants during the event.

What is Health Equity and why is improving ethnic health inequalities important?

The World Health Organisation defines health equity as the absence of unfair and avoidable or remediable differences in health among population groups. Health equity is the opportunity for every person to attain their full health potential, irrespective of social position or other socially determined circumstances.

Inequities in health and healthcare appear across the healthcare ecosystem, with variations of these inequities across ethnic groups. Ethnic inequalities in health outcomes are evident at every stage throughout the life course, from birth to death. These health inequalities can manifest as limited access, unmet needs, or underserved communities.

Differences between people can often lead to different responses to variation in healthcare delivery. Health outcomes may differ among population subgroups depending on many factors including sex, age, race, ethnicity, lifestyle and genetic background. Reducing inequities in health benefits all of society, by strengthening our healthcare systems and contributes to economic growth.
