Investment Intern

What is the Investment Internship Scheme?

The scheme consists of an 8 week immersive dive into the world of our investment activities which includes insight sessions on the M&G Plc business units to provide a wide base of exposure within the company. Investment interns can also attend investment specific business info session to enhance their learning and ensure they have the opportunity to discuss more day to day activities and gain insight into the lives of our highly successful investment professionals. Each intern will be allocated a buddy from our graduate cohort who will provide informal support and promote integration with the M&G Plc family. You’ll also have the opportunity to attend networking and social events which are essential for promoting the work life balance encouraged at M&G Plc.

What will you do?

You will learn from our industry leading investment professionals and will be encouraged to present your own views and ideas. Interns at M&G Plc make valuable contributions to the teams they work in and will be involved in a variety of tasks focussed on investment analysis. The nature of the work will vary dependent on the business area and team that you are placed, but through collaboration with your assigned manager there is always opportunity to tailor the internship to things that you already enjoy while remaining open to new and exciting areas on offer at M&G Plc.

Work that previous interns have been involved in includes:

  • Performing credit, company and market analysis
  • Analysing the creditworthiness of a company
  • Sourcing sector and stock specific ideas for funds

You will be placed in a team one of the following areas:

Private & Alternative Assets: M&G is one of the largest managers of private assets in Europe with over £65bn of asset under management. The Private & Alternative Assets group consists of four teams, Private Fixed Income, Real Estate, Infracapital and Alternatives and totals over 500 employees. The teams source and manage private assets mostly on behalf of institutional clients and the Internal client with the assets split about 50:50 between third party and internal funds.

Equities: Our Equities business manages over £61bn (as of 30 June 2020) both in the UK and globally across a range of investment styles including income, value and growth. We have a conviction-led, long-term approach to investing and believe that we can deliver the best returns for our clients through active management.

Research & ESG: The Research team delivers M&G Plc’s proprietary analysis and views into the investment process. Fund managers use Research team output to inform portfolio construction and investment decision-making. Analysts use a range of raw materials to form their analysis and views: company financial statements, meetings with company management, news, industry data and ESG data. Analysts express their views in terms of hard metrics such as credit ratings or equity valuations, and written output such as earning commentary or research papers. Analysts also make qualitative and quantitative assessments of a company’s ESG credentials. Analysts also engage directly with fund managers to collaborate in the process of investment idea generation.

The Stewardship & Sustainability (ESG) team develop and deliver ESG subject matter knowledge within M&G plc. These insights are used to inform both analysts and fund managers on big Sustainability themes. They also help to determine the priorities in our engagements with investee companies, and to shape long-term investment strategies in funds that are targeting a successful climate transition. The team collaborates closely with analysts and investment teams to inform portfolio construction, especially in M&G Plc’s growing range of ESG-aligned strategies.

Treasury and Investment Office: The M&G Plc Treasury and Investment Office (T&IO) is responsible for the portfolio management and oversight of the internal Life and Annuity Fund investments, including setting Strategic Asset Allocations and selecting Fund Managers. The team is also responsible for M&G Plc Group Treasury activities.

Cash & Currency: The Cash and Currency team design and manage treasury product mandates for the asset manager and the asset owner as well being the global execution hub for cash and FX markets.

Public Fixed Income: M&G Plc’s Public Fixed Income business manages approximately £140bn of assets for institutional and wholesale clients. The investment team benefits from the support of one of Europe’s largest in-house credit research teams. The 45-strong team of experienced investment and client service professionals manage assets across a range of strategies spanning Fundamental Credit, Emerging Market Debt, High Yield and Macro/Strategic Credit.

Candidates who succeed with us are self-motivated, capable of building and maintaining relationships and work effectively as part of a team.
