Design & Development Engineering Placement

Leicester is more than just a production facility - it is a full product development centre with global responsibility for its products. Our development facilities include: Advanced 3D CAD systems on-line to other Caterpillar engineering resource centres around the world, full product prototyping and test capabilities, and, through the international network, access to some of the most advanced R&D facilities in the world.

The Peterlee site, engineers and manufactures Articulated Trucks, which are then exported globally. Our product design centre includes state of the art facilities with an immersive environment, machine proving ground, learning centre and complete factory which is the sole producer of Caterpillar Articulated Trucks.

What is the role?

We have opportunities in several areas of our Engineering Design and Development teams, which are responsible for the development of construction machines for assembly in the UK and other countries, for distribution to worldwide markets. The team’s main function is new product development - driven by customer requirements, legislation and the business need - as well as ongoing design improvement of existing products. Our solutions must align with supplier capability and capacity, and be validated to rigorous quality specifications.

What experiences can we offer you?

During your placement year you will rotate and gain experience in various engineering areas, including:

  • Core design and integration
  • Performance, controls and simulation
  • Machine testing and development
  • A cross functional team aimed at exposing you to manufacturing or customer support.

Working with experienced team members you will receive all the coaching, guidance and support for your work and personal development. It is our intention that you will be given opportunities to develop your knowledge and experience within a real world setting. Our aim is that these industrial placement opportunities provide the firm foundations necessary for a long and successful future career.

The scheme will mentor you in the fundamental steps of deterministic design, the basics of machine performance, problem solving, development and validation, whilst learning the details of each subsystem.

What are we looking for?

We are looking for people who can demonstrate technical knowledge and the practical application of engineering theory, along with sound decision making, professionalism, and an enthusiasm for engineering. You will also have strong planning and organising skills.

The following degrees will be considered, and you must be on track to achieve at minimum a 2:2.

  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Automotive
  • Aeronautical
  • Motorsport Engineering
  • Electronics/Electrical Engineering

We hold a Meet and Greet day for all new UK placement students.
