Submarine Engineering Placement

At Rolls-Royce, we pioneer the power that matters. In our Submarines division, that power has been propelling the Royal Navy’s fleet of nuclear submarines for over 50 years.

Join our Submarines Engineering team as an intern, and you could be developing innovative solutions as part of the design and manufacture of the next generation of Naval nuclear propulsion plants, or supporting the plant through its lifecycle to keep the nation’s nuclear submarine fleet at sea. Wherever you work, you’ll be part of the team providing propulsion to the United Kingdom’s nuclear deterrent and ensuring the safety of our ultimate customer – the sailors of the Royal Navy’s Submarine Service. Our Defence business is a truly unique place to work and joining this internship programme could be the first step on an incredible career path.

The programme

Our 12-month internship programme is designed to give you great insights and experiences. Working on live projects in our Submarines division, your role will involve problem solving and designing integrated systems for optimal effectiveness. While operating primarily out of our main site in Derby, you could also have placements that include supporting the Astute and Dreadnought class build programmes at Barrow-in-Furness; carrying out maintenance on the fleet at the Faslane or Devonport dockyards; and learning about the wider industry via our Civil Nuclear business. You’ll be learning from some of the most respected and highly qualified professionals in the field and, as you develop, the challenges will increase in terms of both complexity and responsibility. You can expect a blend of on-the-job learning, training modules and project work. And because you’ll be working in a real-world business context, you’ll have every chance to make an impact. You could even be invited to join our graduate programme – this could be a fantastic start to a career with one of the world’s most prestigious global companies.

If you’re a student member of an institute, experience gained on your internship can be used to credit some of your learning towards your graduate programme and chartership status if you choose to join us.

What you’ll need

You’ll be on track to achieve a 2:1 bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in a relevant subject like Mechanical Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Maths, Chemistry or Physics. Just as importantly, you’ll have excellent communication skills and plenty of initiative. Inquisitive and resourceful, you’ll always be looking for new ways to make your mark. You should also be flexible in terms of where you’re based.

Due to the nature of our work, we’re unable to employ anyone who doesn’t have the legal right to live and work in the UK and if you have spent more than three months outside of the UK in the last five years (e.g. travelling or working), we might not be able to employ you. This role is subject to a full UK Security Check Clearance issued by the United Kingdom Security Vetting.

What you’ll get

  • £17,850 pa (pro rata)
  • Learn from experts
  • The chance to join our graduate programme if you perform well
  • Leisure facilities and numerous sports societies and social activities
