Nuclear Controls Engineering Placement

At Rolls-Royce, we pioneer the power that matters. In our Submarines division, that power has been propelling the Royal Navy’s fleet of nuclear submarines for over 50 years.

Join our Submarines Engineering team, and you could find yourself developing innovative solutions as part of the design and manufacture of the next generation of Naval Nuclear Propulsion Plants, or supporting the plant through its lifecycle, keeping the nation’s nuclear submarine fleet at sea. Whatever you choose, you’ll be part of the team providing propulsion to the United Kingdom’s nuclear deterrent and ensuring the safety of our ultimate customer – the sailors of the Royal Navy’s Submarine Service.

Our Defence business is a truly unique place to work. This 12-month internship programme could be your first step towards an incredible career that’s both challenging and exceptionally rewarding.

The programme

Controls Engineering focuses on the measurement and control of wider engineering systems. The huge variety of different engineering systems used globally means a career in this field can give you almost limitless opportunities and challenges. Our internship programme is designed to give you both the insight and experience you need to take your first steps towards that career – not least because you’ll learn from some of the most respected and highly qualified professionals in the field. Working on live projects, over your 12 months you’ll play an important role in our Submarines division, problem-solving and designing integrated systems for optimal effectiveness. You’ll have a mix of on-the-job learning, training modules and project work. As you develop, the challenges will increase in complexity and you’ll take on more and more responsibility.

Because you’ll be applying your skills in a real-world business context, you’ll have every chance to make an impact. You might even be invited to join our graduate programme – a fantastic start to a long-term role with one of the world’s most prestigious global companies.

If you’re a student member of an institute, experience gained on your internship can be used to credit some of your learning towards your graduate programme and chartership status if you choose to join us.

What you’ll do

As an intern, you’ll be assigned an engineer as your line manager, so you’ll be learning directly from a skilled professional. And the projects you do will be in support of a real business need, with a direct link to our products and customers. It makes for a fantastic opportunity to share your ideas and make a real difference. Not only will you receive on the job training, you’ll also get exposure to project management and develop a host of transferable skills. Your day-to-day tasks will vary, and you’ll receive support from different people within the business, all of whom will be committed to helping you achieve your full potential.

What you’ll need

You’ll be on track to achieve a 2:1 bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in a relevant subject, such as Electronics, Electrical, Software or Computer/Control Systems Engineering, or Computer Science. Excellent communication skills, plenty of initiative and an inquisitive, resourceful approach are all important too.

Due to the nature of our work, we’re unable to employ anyone who doesn’t have the legal right to live and work in the UK. If you’ve spent more than three months outside of the UK in the last five years (e.g. travelling, working, living), we might not be able to employ you. This role is subject to full UK Security Check Clearance issued by the United Kingdom Security Vetting.

What you’ll get

  • £17,850 pa (pro rata)
  • The chance to join our graduate programme if you perform well
  • Bonus schemes
  • A competitive pension
  • Training and support specific to your development needs
  • Leisure facilities, clubs, societies and social activities
