Commercial Placement

Northern plays a vital role in the north of England by connecting tens of thousands of people to work, leisure, education and more every day. Arriva Rail North Limited became the new rail operator for Northern on 1 April 2016, marking the start of a nine-year franchise that will transform travel through a £1billion investment in the largest rail network outside London. This is an exciting prospect for everyone – our customers, staff and other stakeholders. 



Northern teams are busy working hard to support the transformation of the North and the railway, including but not limited to the introduction new train depots, new trains, new products, better station facilities and better on time services in order to improve the overall customer experience and drive an increase in railway journeys. 



We are keen to hear from you if you are studying towards a degree in business/generalist/analytical field and are looking to develop your educational learning into some real practical experience, in an extremely exciting time within the rail industry. 

Location will be primarily Northern’s Central Region which includes Greater Manchester and parts of Lancashire, but travel across Northern’s larger network may be required and you must be studying at a university within the Northern network. 

Our Programme

The Northern Year in Industry Placement is a scheme that is designed to attract and develop talented young people into the Rail Industry; we will offer you an opportunity to spend 44 weeks working as part of our Central Region Commercial Team to help you get your career off to a great start. Northern offers a variety of placements across the business including opportunities to work in our Railway Operations, Finance, HR, Commercial and Stations. You will have the opportunity throughout the placement to work with our other Year in Industry students, to share your experiences. 



During the programme you will be working closely with the Commercial Team within Northern’s Central Region (Greater Manchester and part of Lancashire.) The Commercial Team is vital to the delivery of products, growth schemes, promotions, marketing and communications within Northern’s Central Region. The team have a number of ongoing schemes and this placement will involve leading on a number of initiatives to generate additional revenue and patronage for the franchise. 


Some current projects include:

  • Delivering enhancements to Northern’s Advance Purchase ticketing 

  • Working to maximise local level partnership opportunities within the region 

  • Analysing regional revenue trends and making recommendations on opportunities to generate patronage growth

In addition to this, as part of the programme, they will gain an introductory overview of other key areas of the business and will receive full training on bespoke industry software & systems. 

About you:



To apply, you will need to meet the following requirements:

  • 
You will be working towards completing a Bachelor degree or Master degree 

  • Have an interest in project management and devising innovative solutions to tackle complex problems 

  • Work experience is a plus, but not essential 

  • You possess leadership potential and/or technical knowledge 

  • You have strong communication skills and you are fluent in English 

  • You have a high-performance and achievement orientation 

  • You are able to think creatively and outside the box 

  • Experience of completing analytical work is desirable
