Engineering Co-ordinator

Brief description of department

The Homologation department provides a service to both Volvo and Renault Truck brands, ensuring the compliance of all vehicles with all relevant EU and UK/ Irish legislation. Its primary role is to ensure that all current and future vehicle legislation is appropriately reflected in the vehicles marketed and sold in the UK and Irish markets.

The Homologation team provides support to sales engineers, dealers and vehicle operators to help them specify vehicles which meet their operational requirements, and can be operated efficiently and legally. This service primarily covers new vehicles but extends to used vehicles where an operator wishes to change the specification or application of a previously-operated vehicle.

The Homologation team sits within the Product and Sales Delivery function which supports sales through the respective dealer networks and direct sales teams to Volvo and Renault Trucks customers.

About the role

The Technical Co-ordinator is placed within the Homologation department, reporting to the Homologation Manager but has the opportunity to be involved in a wide range of engineering activities. The role offers the opportunity to get a full understanding of a truck’s life, from consideration of operational requirements through specification, ordering, approval and registration to operation. Project work will give a more in-depth understanding and responsibility for specific areas of the wider team’s work.

Responsibilities

The purpose of project work is to give the Technical Co-ordinator as wide an understanding as possible of the application of engineering principles to the real world of truck specification and operation. Some project work will concern specific vehicle applications, some more general work in support of planned activities. Recent and current projects include:

  • Vehicle/ market research – determination of the competitive position of electric vehicles ahead of the launch of the Renault Master electric model.
  • Process mapping – working with the homologation team, engineers and sales admin teams to map key process flows, identifying each stakeholder and milestone in order to improve efficiency.
  • Event support – co-ordinating the production of technical materials to facilitate a national ride and drive event for dealers, then helping lead workshops to ensure the desired product understanding with delegates.
  • Marketing materials – developing documentation to ensure that dealers have the desired technical awareness and sales argumentation to communicate selected products and/or attributes to customers and prospects.
  • Training materials – production and delivery of training materials to enable greater control and efficiency of registration activities in the Volvo dealer network.

Other Duties
The Homologation team sits at the heart of the sales support process and to an extent serves as ‘gate-keeper’ to all engineering activities – if a vehicle isn’t legal it cannot be sold and operated. The complexity of each vehicle requires very careful control throughout its life and there is a requirement for documentation to be managed in a disciplined and consistent manner:

  • Support of the technical elements of registration, including uploads to vehicle registration systems
  • Administrative support of specialist vehicles, such as STGO certificates for Heavy Haulage and declarations of compliance with local operating conditions in Ireland, Austria, etc..
  • Oversight of functional mailbox and action to ensure desired levels of customer support.
  • Analysis and/or reporting of vehicle data.

Current degree requirements

  • Studying for a Mechanical Engineering or related degree.
  • 2 years completed – placement between 2nd & 3rd study years.
  • Academic grades on track for a First or High 2:1 on their chosen studies.

Competencies, skills and knowledge required

  • Appreciation of applied engineering principles
  • Comfort with data analysis and manipulation
  • Attention to detail
  • Good customer-facing skills
  • Confident presentation skills
  • Logic and process-mapping skills
  • ‘Can do’ attitude and openness to new opportunities
