Nuclear Engineering Summer Internship Programme

From working on solutions for sustainable energy security, to being responsible for powering the whole of the UK's Royal Navy nuclear submarine fleet, we want engineers looking for exceptional challenges to join us. Our Nuclear business is involved in truly unique work; where else could you experience major UK nuclear projects? Our reputation is built on a 50-year heritage in serving the naval and civil nuclear industries, but we’re focused on the future. The Small Modular Reactor (SMR) project, for example, represents a once in a lifetime opportunity for UK nuclear companies to design, manufacture and build next generation reactors to meet the UK’s energy needs, and Rolls-Royce is leading the UK consortium.

The programme

Our 10-week summer internship programme is designed to give you both insight and experience. You’ll learn from some of the most respected and highly qualified professionals in their field, gaining practical experience on real-life assignments that will put your theoretical knowledge to the test. Along the way, you’ll work be taught valuable skills. You could even have the chance to join our graduate programme – a fantastic start to a career with one of the world’s most prestigious companies.

If you are a student member of an institute, experience gained on your internship can be used to credit some of your learning towards your graduate programme and chartership status, should you choose to join.

What you’ll do

As an intern, you’ll be assigned an engineer as your line manager, so you’ll be learning directly from a skilled professional. And all of the projects you do will be in support of a real business need, with a direct link to our products and customers. It makes for a fantastic opportunity to share your ideas and really make a difference. Not only will you receive on-the-job training, you’ll also get exposure to project management and develop a host of transferable skills. Your day-to-day tasks will vary, and you’ll receive support from a number of different people within the business, all of whom will be committed to helping you to deliver your best. Your placement will be in either our Civil Nuclear or Submarines division.

What you’ll need

You’ll need to be on track for a 2:1 minimum bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in a relevant subject, to include Mechanical Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Maths, Chemistry or Physics.

Just as importantly, you’ll have excellent communication skills and plenty of initiative. Inquisitive and resourceful, you’ll always be looking for new ways to make your mark, and you’ll be flexible about where you’re based.

Due to the nature of this work, we’re unable to employ anyone who doesn’t have the legal right to live and work in the UK. This role is subject to Full UK Security Clearance and if you have spent more than three months outside of the UK in the last five years (e.g. travelling, working, living), we might not be able to employ you.
