About Ford Motor Company

Ford Motor Company, a global automotive industry leader based in Dearborn, Michigan, manufactures and distributes automobiles across six continents. Ford has about 197,000 employees and 67 plants worldwide, and the UK is one of our most important markets outside the US.

Government & Community Relations Placement

We are looking for talented individuals to undertake a 12-month paid work placement, as part of our Business Placement Programme. You will work in our Government and Community Relations department, starting in September 2017.

This is a great opportunity to gain experience with a global automotive industry leader. From your first day with us you will support the Government Affairs Team to engage policy makers and the business on issues affecting Ford to drive commercial and reputational value in the markets it operates in with a focus on Europe. Your placement with Ford will enhance your understanding of how a global organisation works.

Governments around the world often make legislative proposals for the right reasons - to discourage or prohibit bad practices and to foster the good. However, legislators are not business experts and may sometimes fail to see how their ideas can impact the private sector. The role of Governmental Affairs is to monitor legislative and political developments, to assess their likely influence on Ford, to consult with internal experts, and to communicate our positions to the appropriate external parties. The Ford of Britain Governmental Affairs team manages relationships with local councils, the Devolved and London Assemblies, the Westminster Government and the European Institutions, working to ensure any new business regime is as positive and effective as it can be.

Typical Intern responsibilities might include:

  • Preparing, briefing, advising and helping to facilitate senior managers and directors in meetings with Government representatives
  • Monitoring, understanding and evaluating proceedings at the European institutions, Houses of Parliament, UK central and devolved governments, political think-tanks, non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and other bodies
  • Developing routes to inform the business on relevant developments
  • Supporting high level involvement in policy-making by project managing our response to key public affairs opportunities or threats that arise
  • Supporting the development, delivery and review of the Governmental Affairs Plan

You will need to be able to demonstrate:

  • A strong interest in Governmental affairs and policy
  • Good understanding of UK and European Parliaments and regulatory processes
  • Knowledge and passion about our business and our customers
  • An ability to build excellent relationships and influencing skills both in and outside of Ford
  • Excellent communication skills
  • A can do, find a way, attitude
  • Experience of delivering high quality work to a deadline
  • Creativity, initiative, diplomacy, self-motivation and self confidence

This is a great opportunity to contribute to projects and work streams at an international level across our global organisation.

If you’re interested in an internship with Ford, we’d like to hear from you.
