Scientific Computing Intern

Work Assignment Goals:

• Understand why web based scientific applications are important to a research driven organisation.
• Understand how web based application is built at Vertex and the components that make for a good compliant architecture.
• Explore some new web technologies and make some suggestions for adopting new technologies.
• Create an application frame work and build a web application from start to finish and support cross platforms such as PC and MAC Desktops, Phones and Tablets.
• Learn to deploy an application to a test and production environment and carry out cycles of End Users Acceptance testing.

Skills/Educational Background Required:

Non-Technical

• An aptitude for web programming.
• Quick learner and not afraid to try ideas out.
• Good with people and can mix well with a variety of personalities.
• Good verbal and written communication skills.
• Problem solving skills and the determination to solve challenging problem.
• Independent working and open and willing to explore new paths.

Technical

• MySQL and Oracle Database creation and querying using SQL.
• Python or similar language.
• JavaScript based web development frameworks and interface components.
• ColdFusion Web Development Frameworks & client side jQuery JavaScript libraries.
• HTML and CSS interface design.

Skills to be Learned:

This experience will provide the following skills:-

• Managing Code using SVN Repository
• Deploying web applications using Jenkins deployment and task scheduler.
• Building databases (MySQL and Oracle) and querying using SQL and Python SQL Alchemy ORMs.
• Python Flask & Python Django web development frameworks.
• ExtJS, Node.js and Bootstrap JavaScript based web development frameworks and interface components.
• ColdFusion Web Development Frameworks & client side jQuery JavaScript libraries.
• Python Jinja Templates, HTML and CSS interface design.
• Python PEP8 Scripting and Library usage which may include Object Oriented Programming.
• ChemAxon, Open Eye, Knime and other Python and JavaScript Chemoinformatics extensions.
• Highcharts and D3 gallery JavaScript visualisation extensions.
