About Siemens

Siemens is a global company that employs over 400,000 people in nearly 190 countries worldwide. For nearly 170 years, pioneering technologies and the business models developed from them have been the foundation of Siemens’ success. Our central research and development unit – Corporate Technology Research in Energy and Electronics (CT REE) – plays an important role in this.

Research & Development Project Placement

Siemens CT REE have joined forces with the Science & Technologies Facilities Council (STFC), the University of Oxford and the University of Cardiff on a collaborative R&D project to build an energy storage demonstration system at a test site at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory in Harwell, Oxfordshire.

Siemens CT REE is providing the system concept, project management and control system expertise to this groundbreaking Research and Development project.

The project is focussed on the use of ammonia as a carbon-free fuel, to fully decouple the supply and demand of electricity from fluctuating renewable energy sources. A small scale demonstrator is being designed and assembled, to evaluate the performance and scalability of a system that accepts intermittent energy and delivers reliable matched base load electricity to meet demand.

What are my responsibilities?

  • To assist in the build, commissioning and testing of the energy storage demonstration system at the test site at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory.
  • To collaborate with internal & external stakeholders to ensure successful project completion.
  • To manage small scale projects in a timely and efficient manner.
  • To contribute to the success of the project, both in written reports and verbally in meetings.

What do I need to qualify for this job?

  • You will be working towards a 2:1 (or above) in Engineering, Physics or Natural Sciences and be looking to complete a year in industry as part of your degree.
  • This is a very ‘hands on’ role and the successful candidate will need to draw upon a wide range of skills from Planning and Project Management, to Installation and Commissioning.

What else do I need to know?

The placement would run for 12 months from the summer 2017 (e.g. from 31/7/17, but there is some flexibility for an earlier / later start).
