Youth Programme Leader

We are looking for Youth Programme Leader (Programme Leader) to work in London, Surrey, Buckinghamshire & Berkshire, West Midlands, Manchester, Lancashire or Yorkshire.

Programme Leaders are responsible for the management and smooth running of the National Citizen Service (NCS). You will line manage a team of up to 14 staff members and oversee the pastoral care and development of up to 84 young people.

Programme Leaders need strong decision-making and problem-solving skills, and the ability to keep a clear head in fast-paced and pressurised situations, and should be prepared for a rewarding role as part of an intense summer programme.

Main Responsibilities:

Pastoral staff team management

  • Manage up to 14 staff throughout the programme to ensure the highest quality facilitation and pastoral care for all participants (including support and development)
  • Work closely with The Challenge core staff to ensure effective delivery of the programme including its curriculum of activities
  • Ensure regular performance feedback is given to staff and support provided throughout the programme
  • Work with the core staff team to complete overall feedback on each staff member at the end of the programme

Logistics and administration

  • Manage timings and processes to ensure the programme runs to schedule
  • Hold all sensitive information of young people on the wave in line with The Challenge data protection policies

Leading young people

  • Lead engaging pre-set evening sessions with all young people on the programme
  • Assist with curriculum delivery where necessary

Candidates must demonstrate the following skills and characteristics:

Essential:

  • Experience of managing and inspiring a staff team
  • Experience of motivating groups of young people (ideally aged 15-17) and providing pastoral support
  • Experience of managing young people who can exhibit challenging behaviour
  • Experience of working in a fast-paced and demanding environment and being able to make decisions under pressure
  • A flexible approach to work and ability to adapt working style to different environments and teams
  • The ability to understand and follow safeguarding and Health and Safety guidelines - alongside other organisational policies and procedures

Beneficial:

  • Experience of leading a curriculum
  • Knowledge and experience of working on social action projects

In summer 2016, 38,000 young people across our regions took part in our eighteen day intensive NCS programme. The scheme is available to young people from all backgrounds to take part in outdoor activities, meet new people and give something back to their communities. By taking part they learn new skills and have a great experience they can put on their CVs or college applications.
