I found it really enjoyable, particularly the negotiation skills exercise which allowed us to work together and learn the value of good communication skills in a business environment and the importance of being prepared to compromise and prioritise our interests.
I enjoyed the insight immensely. A very well struck balance between time in one’s seat and the events planned by graduate recruitment throughout the three weeks meant that each day was different and exciting. To this end, although one had to contend with several rigorous assessments, there was always an opportunity to blow off steam following the completion of these. I also found the substantive work completed whilst sitting with the two associates I was placed with during my vacation scheme to be enjoyable in that, although it was very challenging, the sense of satisfaction derived from beginning to get to grips with some very complex commercial concepts was incredibly encouraging. Finally, being around motivated lawyers who were clearly keen to share experiences and professional advice was enjoyable and provided a clearer understanding of what the life of a lawyer is like, both in and out of the office.
It was very enjoyable. It gave me a real insight into the firm and the kind of work it does, but at the same time a lot of fun events were organised for the vac schemers to socialise as a group.
I thoroughly enjoyed the three week vacation scheme at Allen and Overy. It was a good mix of introductions to the different practice areas within the firm, networking with current employees (of all levels, from trainee to worldwide senior partner!), completing genuine work as well as some dreaded written assessments and a client pitch exercise.
The vacation scheme was perfectly organised to give us a vast range of experiences in a relaxed, friendly atmosphere. We were able to meet and work with employees from a range of backgrounds and levels, and they were always honest. I really enjoyed the vacation scheme, because it gave me the opportunity to get fully involved with the firm, working on their real client work, and talking to people about their real experiences. Throughout the three weeks, I was able to have a lot of fun while also learning a lot about legal practice and about A&O. I also had the opportunity to visit an international office for one week, during which I was able to fully experience what life at A&O would be like. To meet such a wide range of people, and to be involved in work which spans so many jurisdictions (and to even visit those jurisdictions), was amazing.
I really enjoyed my vacation scheme at Allen and Overy. The opportunity to sit in two different departments helped in gaining an insight into how the firm works. Additionally, the social events were not only fun, but also encouraged engagement with other students, trainees, associates and partners.
The insight was thoroughly enjoyable - everyone I met seemed focused on making sure my questions were answered and that I had a good time. When sitting in departments, people made an effort to include me in a variety of different tasks and were always approachable enough to answer any questions I may have had.
This was the first summer vacation scheme I completed and it was an excellent experience. The firm was friendly, supportive and the work was varied and interesting. I was given a broad insight into the high quality work that Allen & Overy undertakes with the opportunity to answer questions at every available opportunity. The scheme was fantastically well organised with a good balance of socials, work and assessment. There wasn't a competitive atmosphere amongst the vacation scheme students and the graduate recruitment team were able to guide me if there were any issues that arose. I would recommend this placement to anyone interested in pursuing a career in law at a top Magic Circle firm.
