Placement (10 Months+)

What was the application process like?

The process is similar to other applications, you send in your CV, complete online interviews and then go through an assessment center. The only difference I found was the Microsoft assessment center was more about finding your strengths and enjoyments.

What was the interview process like?

Very enjoyable, I got to speak to my interviewers as people. We were able to discuss what I enjoyed doing at previous jobs and what I disliked. This helped them understand what role I would suit.

What advice would you give to students applying for your role?

Be honest and upfront with what you enjoy and what excites you. Microsoft interviewers will be sure to ask this question to help you find a role that suites your preferences. Help them to help you.

How much responsibility do you have?

A lot. I did not really realize how much I would be given whilst being an intern. The amount has shocked me. If I knew this when I first joined, I would’ve not believed it as I was so nervous but being here has really drawn me out of my shell.

What do you most enjoy about your role?

The incredible people I work with, I often find myself working with people who have 20+ years of experience in one product area and their knowledge is unrivaled. It’s great, not only get their input on the product but also advice and guidance.

What has been your biggest challenge?

Before joining I struggled to put myself out there to new experiences. Before joining I was quite shy and nervous, and now I regularly present to a couple of hundred people, and I love it!

How has this experience exceeded your expectations?

I first realized that it exceeded my expectations when I was in Lisbon meeting my team in person for the first time and I realized that I truly enjoy the role I’m in and the company I work for.

What activities are there outside of work?

Being an intern, there is always something going on - whether this has been set up by the intern committee, your stretch project team or the Early in Career events that go on throughout the year.

How promising are the graduate prospects?

Very promising. Whether or not you decide at the end of the year that Microsoft is for you, the HR team set up regular meetings to review your CV, cover letter and whatever else you may need to join the graduate market.
