About Stephanie

I am a student at the University of Hertfordshire – studying Business and Human Resource Management. I am currently spending my sandwich year at BSH as the Human Resources Intern.

Why your industry?

What really appeals to me about HR is the variety of roles it has, for instance – recruitment, learning & development and payroll to name a few. Having so many areas within one department offers plenty of opportunity to gain incredible experience and insight into the real workings of a global business. As well as the opportunity to be involved in a number of exciting projects.

This industry also appeals to me as HR enables you to strengthen so many key skills such as communication, team working and problem solving whilst working in the heart of a dynamic and innovative company.

What advice would you give to someone applying for your role?

My advice would be to - firstly research the company. But secondly - be yourself during interviews. Grades are important, as is work experience but the element that stands out the most is you. Be yourself, be truthful about your skills and attributes and know what you want to achieve. Once in the role my advice would be to get involved with as many projects as possible and to really engage with your team, the business and any duties available to you. Make the most of the placement and really push yourself.

What was the atmosphere like in your team?

The team is very welcoming, supportive and approachable. I have felt extremely supported, by not only my manager, but also the whole team. Everyone has shown a willingness to help as well as guide and offer me advice.

What did you enjoy most about your role?

The element I have enjoyed the most is that from my very first day, I felt like one of team and a regular employee. I have had the opportunity to work in multiple areas within HR, such as: administration, recruitment and L&D. I feel that I have gained vital experience, been able to challenge myself and be involved with tasks and projects that have a real impact on the business.

How much responsibility were you given?

I was given a lot more responsibility than I had imagined. I have been able to work on tasks and projects that have had high importance for the company. As well as having the freedom to work on my own ideas, tasks and projects whilst managing my own work schedule. My ideas of changes that could be implemented to current documents, systems and processes were always encouraged and listened to.

What has been your biggest challenge?

My biggest challenge was for me to come out of my shell and to be more confident. My placement has definitely helped with this as it has enabled me to challenge myself through numerous opportunities. I have been able to do things that I would never have thought I would ever do thanks to the support of an amazing team.
