Job Title: Global Investment Banking Summer Analyst
Overall Rated 8.1
★★★★★★★★☆☆
The Role
- 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
-
The internship was 8 weeks with a week of training at the beginning. The average hours were half 8 until 10-11, but this depends on the particular sector / team you are working in.
At the beginning of the internship we were given a weeks long training which introduced us to investment banking along with teaching us some of the necessary skills. In the first couple of weeks everyone was really helpful and we could ask any questions we wanted. Towards the end of the internship you were given more responsibility and left to get on with the work that was asked of you, by this time you did not have to be asking questions. Throughout the 7 weeks there was a lot of exposure to many different levels of staff, I worked with analysts, associates and directors.
- 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
-
Individuals were always very supportive and grateful when you completed a bit of work. I felt like a member of the team and not just a summer intern.
- 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
-
AT RBC there is a 'buddy' scheme in which you are paired with another member of staff from another team. The management in my team were very helpful if I had any issues.
- 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
-
At the beginning we were introduced to a lot of new concepts and methodology, towards the end we were given a lot more diverse work.
- 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
-
See above
- 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
-
I have developed a greater attention to detail and a good work attitude which will help me at University and in later life.
The Organisation
- 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
-
Everyone had a good sense of humour and the atmosphere was fairly relaxed, even when it was getting late.
- 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
-
HR ran the internship very well, organising 'lunch and learn' sessions and other social events.
- 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
-
Individuals invested a lot of time and effort in developing your skills.
- 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
-
- There were no perks with this internship
- 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
-
Still awaiting feedback.
Other Information
- 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
- 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
-
Accommodation – £169 a week – 10 minute tube from the office but I would recommend getting a place as close as possible.
- 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
-
A lot of bars and pubs nearby – may not always have the time to go and visit them.
- 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
-
The hours are very long so there is not always the opportunity to get involved in other things. However, work was flexible if you wanted to take an hour or two out of the day to go and do something.
- In addition to these questions, is there any extra information you would like to leave about your experiences on your work placement that other students may be interested in?
-
Overall a very good experience and good insight into what it is like to work at RBC. I think the experience here is the best among all investment banks (going on feedback from friends) and I hope to get a job offer after I finish.
