    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I really enjoyed my 10 weeks at Boots, the people I worked with across all departments were all friendly, approachable and were all willing to listen and help me, regardless of their position.

    5/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I became very close with the category team I was supporting during my time at Boots, and despite only being an Intern in the company for less than 10 weeks, I really felt like part of the team and they all really appreciated and valued myself and the work I was doing. By the time I had left my position, I left with the team knowing I had made a difference. I received outstanding praise from all members of the team, which was fed back to my line manager.

    4/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • My line manager was extremely supportive during the entire 10 weeks, making it clear that she was available to help in any way or any problem all I had to do was ask. I had scheduled weekly meetings where we reviewed my progress on my project. She helped shape my learning and development and ensured I was moving in the right direction, but did not appear dominating so that I could demonstrate my own initiative and flair.

    5/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I believe I had a good balance in terms of how busy I was, some days were certainly more busy than others, but on the whole, the day was what you made of it, as the project is your own.

    5/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was given a lot of responsibility, I chaired a meeting with my category team where I had discussions of implementing new processes and opportunities going forward. I also gave presentations to senior management and the Finance Leadership team which consisted of around 20 senior managers and directors.

    5/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I feel more confident in trusting my own judgement and own initiative and especially in the area of challenging ideas with people. I also believe my interpersonal skills have also been lifted.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Very relaxed, friendly and fun. There was always lots going on at the support office and lots of activities to get involved in, whether it be charity fun days, presentations, free lunches, freebie events as well as quarterly balcony announcements on how well Boots was performing.

    5/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • It is a very well structured programme with lots of elements which give you a real taste of what it is like to work in a finance department and for Boots. The induction week was very informative and had speaker from all parts of the business, software training and time in store to learn that side of the business.

    5/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • Boots have a very strong emphasis on personal development and what is paramount to them is to do what is best for each and every employee, I personally felt I could ask to do something specific or get involved in a part of the business and someone will definatley make it happen. The internship was a great grounding to start onto the Boots Graduate Programme for which I was offered a place on.

    5/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Flexi Time

    Sports and Social Club

    Subsidised/Company Gym

    International Travel

    Financial Bonus

    Company Parties/Events

    Staff Sales/Staff Shop

    Above 25 days holiday

    Working from home

    3/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • I received a Graduate Job Offer in the last week of my internship, which I have accepted having enjoyed my time at Boots and in a Finance role. The programme itself is designed to develop future leaders and you are regarded as 'special talent' in the organisation so the opportunities for anyone on the graduate programme are huge.

    5/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • The internship scheme itself consisted of 8 interns, all of which lived close by in the East-Midlands area. We all integrated well as students of whom were all in their penultimate year of study and often went on socials/nights out together over the summer as well as spending out lunchtimes together.

    5/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • As you are regarded as a student still, I managed to secure a summer let in a private student hall in the city centre which was very cheap (student rates) and many others had house contracts having either lived or went to nearby universities.

    4/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • There are plenty of places to eat out, go for drinks and other activities in Nottingham, its a large city with plenty to do there, certainly something I was never bored of.

    5/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • There were regular sports including Cricket and Football, charity fundraisers and more that were available to us all.
