    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • My placement was a constant struggle. I had no manager, equipment kept breaking none to support me, help me or even knew what my role was. I took charge of the situation and I can honestly say that this was the best job ever...

    4/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I felt like family on a personal level but on a professional level I don't feel that the work I did was appreciated or valued. As nobody knew what I was doing, for a long time nobody realised the impact it had. It was only after a few months that I was given a manager and a graduate to train and by that time my struggle was over and I had made the job a lot easier for myself and the grad i was given by my new manager to train and my hard work, perseverance and commitment on my own was forgotten.

    4/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • The first few months of my placement I had no manager or supervisor. The only other people who understood my role was working across the country in Sheffield and only spent 50% of his time on the role.

    5/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Most of my placement has consisted of me being extremely busy which at times stopped me from being able to get involved in experiences that other interns were doing such as charity work.

    4/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • Due to the fact that I had no support or guidance I had to learn everything myself. This included managing all of my own time, changing process and lasing with senior management. After 6 months I was promoted to the Lead position and given a graduate to train.

    4/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • The only thing missing was that as my role was for a full year and it wasn't hands on technical at all then as I am doing an ITMB degree and have to build something for my dissertation then my placement didn't help me with any real skills to assist me with this.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • I think I got lucky as a lot of the other grads and interns had a very different experience to me but my team was a lot of despite the many changes that were constant as people in different offices around the country were getting made redundant.

    4/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • This was great as it allowed you to meet the other placement studies and get a better understanding of what goes on in the company and how you will be linked into that! After this we had a meet and greet with the teams we were joining. This was good as it made the first day a little less daunting as you already knew faces!

    5/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • I did countless security courses, 2 ITIL courses, 1 project management course, and there were hundreds, many thousands more online courses I could do if i wanted or had the time!!

    4/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Flexi Time

    Subsidised Canteen

    5/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • All 4 of last years interns were offered graduate positions at HP when they come back from university on the basis that they achieve a 2:1 in their degree. There are 6 interns here this year and I have high hopes of being offered a contract to come back too.

    5/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Grads and interns usually went out every time there was a new intake of grads to welcome them to the community. This is every 2 months or so!

    4/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Newcastle offers something for everyone and every budget!

    4/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Newcastle has something for everyone, bars restaurants, clubs, beach, mini golf, bowling, gyms, spas I could go on all day..!

    5/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
