    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • The placement really tested my skill sets and developed my professionalism to every extent and that is what I wanted out of it, the opportunity to prove that I could succeed not only academically but within industry too and I really enjoyed proving that!

    4/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Of course you will not treat all your colleagues like family immediately, but you will always be an extremely valued member of your team. They take you on and the devote countless hours training you to be proficient in your role and then they give you that extra inch by giving you the opportunity to build on what you have gained, often through volunteering projects, or by taking the leadership role in critical Team tasks.

    5/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • My Manager made me feel so at ease from the very beginning and I would say that I owe a lot of the opportunities that arose for me to build my experience and professionalism to them. They are inspiring and have played a crucial role by advising me on my decisions for future career goals, which comes from hearing their own experiences which have shaped my understanding of IBM and the IT industry throughout my placement. Invaluable!

    3/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I am in a very fast paced section of the overall corporation. It is very demanding, but no real life job ever has the "perfect balance". You will be busy, but this will accelerated your understanding and ability to complete your role. Once you know you're role, IBM offer a huge number of other things to get involved in such as THINK 40 education modules, Round table events with senior executives and Give Back a company initiative which encourages all employees to volunteer their time and effort to projects, which could see you demonstrate to Primary school kids what a "Smarter Planet" could be like, mentor 1st year University students or even spearhead you own community project!

    3/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was given ownership of new responsibilities on a regular basis. Naturally they were quite simple tasks in the beginning, such as generating reports or processing small requests and once I gained enough expertise in the role I took on much more complex tasks such as develop high value contracts working across a number of different teams, systems and processes. I was given the responsibility of assisting with corporate audit preparations, ensuring our account was as audit ready as possible, one of the most high pressured and toughest tasks I have under taken.

    4/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I developed both hard and soft skills that I could never have been taught in a class room environment. I study Information Technology Management for Business so IBM as a company and the role of an RFS Manager allowed me to built on my business and technology skills and I have gained expertise and knowledge that I feel will help me excel in my final year of study

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Once I built more of a rapport with my team, it was a lot of fun. It has meant that the time has flown by and I have really enjoyed the placement (along with the work)

    4/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • As this is a yearly process, it was well organised. I was provided with a lot of support from Foundation (the community that looks after interns) and there was a great community within the interns.

    5/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • I have gone on three educational events to hone in on my employability skills. There has also been opportunities and courses run over lunch, which engage you with the rest of the organisation.

    5/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Flexi Time

    Subsidised Canteen

    Sports and Social Club

    Company Parties/Events

    4/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • As the company is constantly evolving, it is hard to tell what the future prospects are. It is a very exciting period nevertheless to be in the company.

    4/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Yes. The interns were great fun to be with and there was regular socials, for those who want it.

    4/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • It is much cheaper than where I go to university. The taxis are extremely cheap! Obviously, the thing to consider is that the more time you spend in a place, the more acquainted you are with it and hence you are aware of the savings you can make within the different areas.

    4/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • I am not that sort of person so I am not well suited to answer this question.

    3/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • There were opportunities to provide support to the local community, in particular the schools with mock interview days.

    4/5
