About British American Tobacco

British American Tobacco is the world’s most international tobacco company, with products sold in almost every country. We produce a wide range of tobacco products, mainly cigarettes, but also cigars, roll-your-own, pipe tobacco as well as smokeless tobacco products. Tobacco consumption poses real and serious risks to health, so our research and development activities are principally focused on better understanding the harm caused by tobacco use and working to develop potentially less harmful products. As such, we are committed to achieving leadership of our industry and to be recognised as the world’s most responsible tobacco company.

12 Month Industrial Placement

Our Research & Development organisation is a global community made up of over 1200 employees. In the UK, we employ over 400 people across our facilities in Southampton and Cambridge and they come from a wide variety of disciplines from industry, governmental and academic backgrounds.

Our Southampton laboratories provide our central R&D facilities, where we are undertaking research in a broad spectrum of scientific disciplines including analytical chemistry, materials science, toxicology, molecular biology, engineering and statistics. Our Cambridge laboratories focus on tobacco plant biotechnology.

We are working to develop a range of potentially reduced-risk tobacco and nicotine products, including conventional cigarettes, tobacco heating products, e-cigarettes and nicotine inhalation products. The science involved to support this is complex and extremely challenging.

In the UK, we offer one year placement opportunities to students who, as part of their undergraduate sandwich degree course, are looking to gain practical experience of a research environment. We usually hire 8-10 undergraduates on 12 month placements starting in September.

Successful applicants will undertake independent and team projects, having plenty of responsibilities and opportunities for on-the-job training and personal development. We are offering a salary of £15,000 per annum, 25 days annual leave, as well as other British American Tobacco benefits.
