Purpose of Job

To provide the student with industrial experience in electrical design, test and development.

Main responsibilities

  • This is an entry-level position to the Electrical section of the Engineering department and hence responsibilities will be dependent on experience to date, the jobholder will be responsible for only a few aspects of the development cycle. (e.g. in simple terms: - generation of solutions and testing). In addition the jobholder will tend to concentrate on development work on control circuits, looms i.e. non-complex, single unit items.
  • Liaise with Team/ Project Leader/s to clarify objectives, area of responsibility and standards associated with of each specific piece of work to be undertaken.
  • To perform tasks allocated to a given specification.
  • Where appropriate, liaise with internal staff (e.g. Customer Service Engineers, Engineers from within the Engineering disciplines) for the purpose of clarifying the exact nature of identified faults and parameters for project success.
  • To learn how prototype and production equipment is developed using CAD systems (FAST-CAD or ORCAD).
  • To learn how to undertake initial testing/ simulations to check correct functionality and operation of designed circuits.
  • To learn how to build initial design/ prototype, with or without outside assistance, and subsequently test in accordance with department standards.
  • Liaise with suppliers to confirm specifications of new/modified items for prototype and production purposes.
  • Produce and complete appropriate documentation related to the electrical design process e.g. circuit diagrams, loom drawings, mechanical piece part drawings.
  • When appropriate check standard of documentation with Electrical Draughtsperson or other designated person.
  • Produce relevant bill of materials relating to the new or modified item.
  • Liaise with Engineering Services department for the purposes of moving a ‘proven’ design into the production phase.
  • Attend design review meetings, as required by the project team leader/s, to confirm progress made, difficulties encountered and to receive information from other project team members.
  • Adhere and comply with all relevant departmental and company standards/ procedures and complete associated documentation.

Personal Requirements

  • Completed first or second year of degree course in Electrical Engineering, or similar subject.
  • Be able to demonstrate part competence in own discipline; breadth of specialism limited within the major aspects of electrical engineering.
  • Able to receive and understand relatively straight-forward instructions for direction and guidance.
  • Able to develop skills in basic theories, practices or procedures in one or more ‘skill-areas’ through formal training.
  • Able to apply basic knowledge/ skills to own work.
  • Able to build stable and useful working relationships; able to co-ordinate effectively with others.
  • Able to communicate effectively face to face and in writing with people at various levels in an organisation.
  • Able to achieve goals/ objectives as an individual and also preferably in a team environment.
  • Understands relationships between work processes and the business, but the horizon’s are limited to own team.
  • Able to use existing, clearly defined procedures to solve routine, non-complex problems.
  • Able to organise own time and workload to deliver against tasks set by others, with a limited, short-term horizon.
