About Mercer

One of the world’s largest providers of consulting, outsourcing and investment services, we help our clients (all 25,000 of them) get the important things right for their people. We provide advice and guidance on everything from salaries, rewards and benefits, to pension schemes, investments and risk management. Our clients trust us because we’re experts. So we take knowledge very seriously.

With over 20,000 people across 41 countries, we deliver HR and related financial advice, products and services on a global scale. Our work is delivered by professionals who can draw upon a real depth of experience and expertise. It’s an approach that, time and again, has seen us help our clients motivate, retain, and improve the performance of their people.

The breadth of our services and the fact that we think that bit harder doesn’t just help us produce great results for our clients – it also makes us a fascinating and challenging place to work.

Choosing where you’re going to build your career is a big decision. We understand that you may well want to get a clear idea of what we do and how we do it first. This is why we run our eight-week summer internship programmes and 15 month placements (within our Retirement Service Centre in Belfast) which offer far more than just work experience. We also regularly hold Insight Days, designed to provide a small taste of the opportunities here.

Our summer internships within Investment Consulting or Retirement, Risk & Finance allow you to gain true insight into a graduate career with Mercer. Here are just some of the things that our 2011 interns have said about their time at Mercer;

‘I have had lots of work to do and now feel comfortable taking on new tasks. I have been finishing off the pension valuations for the three universities that I have been working on recently and they have been sent out to the clients. It has been nice to have so much of my own work sent out on such an important task’. Eva , Trainee Consultant (Retirement), Glasgow

‘The start of the week saw my first fund manager meeting; discussing the pro’s and con’s of emerging market investments and how this can effect the risk associated to a portfolio through direct or indirect exposure. I made the most of my time in the meeting – asking a series of questions that on some occasions left gaps in the strategies the managers were proposing.’ James, Investment Analyst, Edinburgh

‘I have found that by actively asking team members of varying seniority and who work on different clients for work, it is possible to get good exposure to different things Retirement, Risk & Finance do.’ Joel, Actuarial Trainee, London

We have an enlightened culture with an emphasis on knowledge and understanding. If you choose to join us as a graduate we’ll help you become an expert in your field. And, as we’re one of the largest providers of consulting, outsourcing and investment services in the world, your technical skills and commercial outlook could take you a long, long way.

You may not have thought of Mercer as a place to build a career before. We understand that. But we’re confident that the more you find out, the more you’ll realise that a future with Mercer makes a lot of sense

Meet Simon

  • Name: Simon
  • University: Oxford University
  • Course: MEng Mechanical Engineering
  • Position: Investment Analyst

  • What made you choose Mercer for your internship?

I wanted to discover what it was like to work in the financial sector. The investments industry captured my interest because it is dynamic. Mercer investment consultancy is well renowned and their support to new graduates is unparalleled. This is important for me as an engineering graduate making a move into the financial sector.

What other types of companies and industries did you consider? What made you ultimately decide that consulting was right for you?

I applied to a number of financial services firms for positions in consultancy, audit and corporate finance. Consultancy work provided the breadth of experience I was looking for. Mercer’s consultants have enormous expertise and the ability to communicate their ideas to clients and develop professional relationships.

What type of work were you doing during your internship?

My day to day tasks were varied. I prepared numerical data for investment performance reports by using online resources and by contacting fund managers directly to obtain necessary data. I was given the liberty to summarise my opinion on a fund performance. We also attended seminars led by experienced consultants. I was given a project by my team leader which provided a focus for the duration of the internship.

What did you enjoy most about the internship?

I was included as a valuable member of my team from the first day. I was also given the responsibility of producing work that was used in client meetings.

What did you find most challenging about the internship?

I encountered several new concepts which I had to become familiar with very quickly. Throughout my internship I became more comfortable with working at a fast rate to meet deadlines without compromising on quality and thoroughness.

How did the internship influence your decision to accept the offer of a graduate position with Mercer?

By comparing my experience at Mercer with reports from interns elsewhere, it was evident that Mercer has a fantastic working environment. My colleagues at Mercer were extremely motivated. On top of this, I was made to feel immediately welcome. I also played for the Mercer cricket team on several occasions after work.

How would you suggest that other interns can make the most of their time during an internship?

It is essential to put all your effort into developing your knowledge of Mercer. By being motivated and using all the resources available at there is an enormous opportunity to gain during the 8 week internship.
