    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • My role was very middle-office focused. The team I was put in were absolutely great - I couldnt have asked for a better bunch. People moan about how things get monotonous; which they probably do if you dont ask for more stuff to do! I didnt find the day to day work hard at all, but along the way I was given some challenging tasks. The job gave me a massive opportunity to network with whoever I wanted in the bank - HR organise loads of small events for this also. The days went really quickly, infact the whole 9 weeks zoomed by, which must mean I had fun! Seriously though, if you get the chance to get on this programme, do it.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I had a daily task, which otherwise would be completed by another team member each day, so I definately took a load of the team's back. Theres only so much you can do on a 9 week stint, but my team made me feel extremely valued. I even got a few leaving presents at the end.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • My manager was extremely approachable, as was his manager - always willing to chat or help. Infact all management I came into contact with were really patient and always answered any questions I had. Some interns had more of a stucture to their internship, and the managers had set them projects to complete over the 9 weeks. This didnt bother me, I had enough work to keep me busy at all times.

    4/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • This all depends on how much work you want. If I finished something I'd ask for something else, purely for the fact that I dont want to get bored and I dont want the day to go painfully slow. So in general I was always busy. Towards the end when I was wrapping things up, maybe less so but from what I heard, thats pretty standard.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • Considering I was only an intern I was suprisingly given more responsibility that i previously had thought i'd get. I was booking trades, verifying trades, and at one point confirming collateral for certain securitised notes for the spanish financial authorities. For me it was just a case of how much you want stuff to do - of course I did hear that some people were asking for more and more stuff and just not getting it from their managers.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I have learnt enough to know that this is the career I want to be in for the forseeable future. The department specific skills regarding the product are probably the only non transferrable skills I can take away from this internship.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The atmosphere was professional but very laid back; every single member of my team were great fun. Lots of banter. We went out for team drinks on several occasions and I am keeping in contact with them. The hours arent too bad.. 8.30 start (shifted to 8.45 as the days went by...) and normally out by about 6.30 - but this ranged from 5.30 to 7.

    5/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • Deutsche Bank HR did an amazing job. Very well organised, every little thing planned out in a handy little planner book. My HR contact was always on hand, as were the others. Networking events, nights out, speakers, you name it. Would have been nice to have a rotation, but that might be a lot to ask for in 9 weeks.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • 4 days of training - by one of the best teachers ive ever had. Meetings with MDs in the bank. Even met DB's COO! DB spend loads on their intern programme.

    5/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Subsidised/Company Gym

    Company Parties/Events

    4/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • If all goes to plan I shall be returning to enlist on the grad programme. The opportunity for career development is huge and there for the taking. Im looking forward to getting back there and working 'for real' . The Internship experience was great, but obviously at 9 weeks its never going to feel completely like the real thing.

    5/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • 150 or so interns, and made some really good friends that I will be keeping in contact with. We went on nights out, went to pub after work and just generally hung out. Some interns just concentrate on the work side of things which is fair enough I guess.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • I spent 175 a week living 10 mins walk from where I worked. London being London, nights out are expensive, but thats where all the money comes in handy!

    3/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • I lived in hoxton market - nuff said. Wicked nightlife right there, or if I fancied something a bit different, just a tube ride away. Cant go wrong in London really, massive choice.

    4/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Not much time outside of work unfortunately - you are either eating dinner, sleeping or at the pub. I'd never appreciated weekends as much as I did when I worked at DB. I joined the DB gym and tried to go as much as possible but other than that I didnt do much. There is plenty to do if you find the time though (e.g. power league)
