    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I was consistently challenged and pushed throughout my work during the internship, which made it extremely enjoyable; my project was relevant and the work I did was used in the wider business, which contributed to the enjoyment by making me feel valued. Very few tasks were boring or felt like I was having admin pushed onto me.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Everyone was incredibly friendly in my team, and work was both appreciated and used by the colleagues it was presented to. Everyone was extremely open to me organising an induction with them, or just having a chat about their area of work and advice they could give, and the office was generally an exceptionally welcoming and pleasant place to work due to the attitude of most colleagues.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • My line manager was consistently available to give advice and direction when I was struggling with a programming issue, wanted some key metrics checked, or needed advice when creating a predictive model or presentation to go out to the wider business. Support was given in a friendly way; even when asking some questions that now seem obvious in hindsight, management was patient and made sure I understood what I was doing.

    5/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Work load was very fair; there was the odd day where things came up all at once and made what seemed like a well planned day significantly more busy than expected, but most days I was leaving the office at just after 5pm; while the working day was busy, there was a sense that tasks were achievable within working hours.

    4/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • Significant responsibility. I was the main contact for the project that I was working on in our department, and said project was considered a business priority. Responsibility for our predictions and modelling was given to me, with support from my line manager who also helped make sure the project was going as planned, but the sense of ownership on the project was extremely rewarding.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • Learning to code in SQL and use databases to run queries is an invaluable skill which will be extremely helpful, either going into other analytical jobs, or just for giving me a better idea of the syntax involved within programming/coding. Communication skills from working in an office environment are also extremely useful, given the contrast with the nature of most university work. The Excel skills that I picked up are also transferable to a wide array of jobs,

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Extremely friendly; quiet enough to get work done, but not so overbearing that it felt uncomfortable having a conversation with colleagues. Tesco also tries to get feedback from colleagues about the office atmosphere and environment to try and improve it into the future. Don't expect a Google campus style atmosphere; but it's less formal than a traditional office environment.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • Very well organised within my team; when I arrived they had the project that I was working on in mind and prepared for me to start with on day one. Early Careers also organised several development days and events throughout the internship in order to check in on progress and make sure things were going well. Only things that could've been organised better would be accommodation for the internship itself - we were largely left to our own devices to sort this out, which was stressful, particularly when I was informed my location of work had changed only a few weeks before the internship began. The two day store placement could also have been organised somewhere more relevant to the work I was doing.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • The development days organised by Early Careers were part of a large effort to put time into the personal development of the interns. My line manager and I also had weekly one to one catch ups about development, training was made easily available for the more technical parts of my work, and I also had less frequent meetings with my sponsor about development. However, both line manager and sponsor were very approachable, and made themselves available to talk about development at any time it was needed.

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Flexi Time

    Subsidised/Company Gym

    Company Parties/Events

    3/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Very appealing - the graduate scheme seems equally well organised, competitive starting salary and career prospects once it finishes, and I would enjoy coming back due to the nature of the work I was doing and the friendly culture and environment within the office. Would have no qualms pursuing a future career at Tesco after my time in the internship, and a graduate offer was given upon completion.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Extremely good; we were asked to nominate two social secretaries early on in the internship who did a fantastic job organising social events in London and elsewhere for the group to enjoy. The development days, along with having multiple interns in similar departments, meant that we regularly got to see each other and get along very well. Many people have mentioned staying in touch post-internship!

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • I lived in Welwyn Garden City, which was pretty expensive, particularly since it's basically a London borough with how close it is. Cheaper places are available if you don't mind a bit more of a commute in. Close proximity to London means that anything really low priced is pretty hard to find, though it's doable.

    3/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Welwyn Garden City is completely dead in this regard. However, it's only 25 minutes into London on the train, which obviously deals with that problem quite effectively. If you don't mind needing to catch the last train home in an evening (or just decide to live in London) then the nightlife is good, so just depends on accommodation choices and travel availability.

    4/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Not particularly, though admittedly I wasn't looking particularly hard. The only thing I was aware of was a long distance running group in the Welwyn Garden City area, but that was about it.
