About You
It was very clear that HR had put an incredible amount of thought and time into organising a mix of social events, presentations, and workshops to give vacation scheme students a rounded view of the firm.
Everyone we met made was genuinely friendly and helpful, and people went out of their way to make us feel welcome, answer any questions we had, and give us work.
Students are given a trainee mentor, sit with a principal, and have frequent contact with HR at social events and workshops. At any one time, I knew there were at least three or four people I could ask for anything I needed.
The Company
HR did a brilliant job. There was an ideal blend of desk time, presentations, workshops and social events. The order of presentations and workshops made chronological sense, and the events were well-attended by people at all levels of the firm.
Everyone was very welcoming, and actively solicited questions about Linklaters and their own careers. Vacation scheme students were never pitted against each other, which made everything more enjoyable and relaxing.
It was clear that Linklaters' training programme is rigorous and complete: there were seminars for different departments almost daily, as well as seminars or presentations for people at various levels of the firm. Vacation scheme students were encouraged to attend, and it was a valuable insight into the training available.
My trainee buddy and principal made a real effort to explain the context of any work given to me, and gave me typical trainee tasks. However, I wasn't expected to do the work at the same speed as a trainee would, and didn't have to juggle more than a few tasks at once.
Linklaters was very keen to show and explain the firm's culture, giving the vacation scheme students a clear view of what Linklaters wants to be, what challenges and opportunities are available in the industry and for the firm, and what type of traits it considers central to its culture.
Everything Else
There were several events a week, and these were all well-attended by partners, associates and trainees who were happy to answer any questions or just have a chat.
Absolutely. I had a wonderful time, learned a lot about commercial law and the type of work I'd do as a solicitor, and met great people. The programme is flawlessly designed, and everyone at the firm is very friendly.
