    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I really enjoyed being apart of ASOS; the social aspects of the company are fantastic and they really look after their employees. I do feel that the work load and pressure that is put on placement students is extreme. And quite overwhelming to a student who has never worked in a professional environment before or in the role. Despite this; I did learn an invaluable amount of skills and knowledge due to being so heavily involved in my role.

    4/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • At ASOS you are not treated as a placement student but like apart of the team on a permanent basis. This means that you are totally submerged into the company, the business area, and department becoming very valued by your colleagues.

    5/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • This is one area which I was very disappointed with throughout my placement. I found that my experience with managers negative. I had 3 different Managers throughout my placement, all of whom had never had to manage a placement student before and were unaware of the training that I was to receive or aided my learning and development. I feel strongly that a placement student should be given to a Manager who is aware of all details of the placement programme and is understanding that they are a placement student.

    3/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Placement students in Buying at ASOS are entirely overworked. Regularly staying in the office until 8 or 9 to finish the days work.

    1/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was given a lot of responsibility on my team which I was really proud of. The team trusted me with roles which had a large impact on the department.

    5/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • My experience at ASOS was invaluable. From to just experiencing the company to my knowledge to business skills... this will hugely affect my studies and be the foundations to Post Graduate roles.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The atmosphere in the office was busy, loud, and at times hectic. But this is to be expected in the ASOS buying department, spirits were high and people were always happy to help if its needed.

    4/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • As mentioned before, I had 3 different managers during my placement year. This made things extremely difficult to adjust to the wants and needs of each manager and their supervisor style. This had a negative impact on my experience at ASOS and made my 12 months quite difficult.

    2/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • I received interesting training on areas which were relevant to my role. These training sessions were helpful and aided my performance. We had the choice of attending company offered training sessions additional to those which were directly related to our roles.

    4/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Company Parties/Events

    Staff Sales/Staff Shop

    3/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • I'm unsure yet of my post Grad employment - but I would certainly return to ASOS if it was still relevant to the direction I'd like to work in.

    3/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • The social side of the company is great. Everybody is very friendly and so friends are made easily amongst team members. There could have been more organised social events just with the placement students to integrate them all together. But between the teams and departments the social scene was really good.

    5/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • ASOS HQ in Camden, London, therefore the costs of living were very very high and so was socialising. However I do think that the pay is fair considering it is a placement in Fashion (which are known for being badly paid) in line with competitors.

    3/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • ASOS HQ is in Camden so there are plenty of bars very close, after work there is a culture of going to the pubs and bars around the office which are very lively and fun.

    5/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Obviously if you became close with your team you might meet up outside of work, but there wasnt any arranged activities.
