    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I really enjoyed my placement, it gave me the opportunity to use the skills I had developed through my economics degree at university and gave me a real insight into the financial sector - particularly investment management. I was given a very good degree of support but also had the opportunity to work independently on two projects.

  • I was surprised at how supportive and how genuinely interested my colleagues were.

  • I was given lots of support and encouraged to ask lots of questions - I was also able to work independently too.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Very busy, I always had something to do whether it was working on my projects or attending meetings.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was given a great deal of responsiblity and I was expected to take my own approach to my independent projects.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I developed a lot of interpersonal skills through meeting other interns and working with other colleagues in the company. I also developed presentation skills and excel skills.

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Very friendly - hard working but a good balance between socialising and work

  • Very well organised - lots of intern activities, a good variation of activities

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • Standard Life was very committed to providing useful resources to help us develop for example we were given access to bloomberg, reuters and excel workshops

  • Very appealing - it would be a great company to work for

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Yes, there were lots of organised events amongst the interns and within my department. I was surprised at the high number of events.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Reasonable - I used the staff canteen everyday because the food was good and reasonably priced!

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • There are a good few bars and clubs very close by the office

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Didn't really have much time because of the social activities but there are a number of gyms close by that I used occassionally.
