    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • The internship is thoroughly enjoyable, relaxed workplace culture, interesting work that is immediately useful to the company, great learning opportunities, manager who gives clear direction, constant feedback and technical guidance, intern trainings and social activities, beautiful town within 30 min train travel of London, comfortable company house within 10 min to walk, I would recommend it to anyone looking for an enriching summer.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Very. I am involved in all meetings/social activities just like a formal employee. The project given to me is clearly useful to the company, and I had the opportunity to present it to the office at the end of my intern, with people expressing interest in using it and asking about the specific details. Colleagues are friendly and passionate about their work, team spirit is great.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • Despite the fact that I was very shy at the start, my manager is very encouraging to my asking questions, constantly helping out with my debugging/learning and providing detailed feedback in every stage of my code design, implementation, coding standards, areas of improvement, and communication skills. Management further up the line is approachable and the company keeps us well informed with its progress, mission and opportunities, giving a good sense of involvement.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Working hour is very flexible at 7.5 hours, with a good company canteen and one hour lunch break. The work load is also manageable. On the other hand, there is sufficient work to keep me busy all the day.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was given an end-to-end project where I developed a tool for internal debugging and presented it to the tech development and support team. At first the manager would given me very detailed specifications and guide me through code design. Next component he only gives description and asks me to clarify the specifications myself. Next stage I have to figure out what features may be demanded and is feasible, and discuss it with him. Thus I gradually build up the skills to handle the project on my own.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • To a large extent. As I hardly had any experience in software engineering, it almost built up my knowledge and skills from scratch. And it's more than just coding itself, but also understanding of the system, and designing my project to meet the requirement. There were also intern talks aimed at introducing different areas of computer science to people from various background.
