The Role

1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?

The summer scheme was structured, the work was varied and interesting and the office environment was open and friendly. This ensured that my work placement offered me a fantastic insight into life as a surveyor.

2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?

On starting with the firm an effort was made to ensure I met (and thus new the names of) almost all those in the sector in which I was to work. As my experience and knowledge grew I was entrusted with more work and responsibility meaning I was made to feel valued by my colleagues.
4 /5

3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?

From where I worked I was surrounded by employees at all 'stages', from graduates to directors, all of whom were happy to give support and answer any questions I had, irrespective of their simplicity.
5 /5

4. How busy were you on a daily basis?

Given the current nature of the economy and specifically of the property industry, I received a good amount of work daily. However, work placements encourage students to take a proactive role in their experience meaning that the extent to which a student is busy depends on their enthusiasm and motivation, i.e. you make your own work.
5 /5

5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?

Any work I was given entailed a degree of responsibility as it was always real, 'meaningful' work which would have been carried out by another employee had I not done it. Nevertheless, the amount of responsibility I was given steadily increased throughout my placement until I was carrying out work that was vital to the success of developments and projects.
5 /5

6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?

I used a variety of resources (e.g. Excel) throughout my placement and learnt ways in which information can be presented which will provide a good foundation for future development. The training I received was minimal, largely due to the nature of the placement.

The Company

7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?

The atmosphere was excellent.
5 /5

8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?

The scheme was particularly well structured and included a series of talks, social events after work and a mid placement review. A diary of upcoming events was provided at the start of the placement which was particularly useful.
5 /5

9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?

The talks ensured we developed an understanding of several aspects of property. However no specific personal training sessions were put in place, largely because that is perhaps not the focus of the scheme.
3 /5

10. What were the perks on your work placement?

  • Company Parties/Events
2 /5

11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?

Future employment prospects are very appealing.
4 /5

The Culture

12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?

Some after work social activites were planned and we often arranged to meet informally at the end of the day.
4 /5

13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?

It was expensive but expected.
3 /5

14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?

The nightlife was great fun but I often went elsewhere in London for better value for money.
4 /5

15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?

Activities were arranged after work including a sports day and a rounders match.
