The Role
Yes I have very much enjoyerd my internship with National Grid. I was working with the European developement team, but my business coordinator got me time with most of the other departments in the office to gain a good insight into how National Grid operates.
The team are very friendly and welcoming. I have never been pushed to one side, even if its a bit of a silly question. Everyone has time for you, and that doesn't just end at the team, everyone in the building willing to help.
Every day my supervisor helps me with the next steps to my project, and making sure I get on ok, and points me in the direction of people to speak to in order to progress. I meet my manager at least once a week for a 1-1 to make sure that I am getting on ok, and to discuss what personal developements I can work on.
This can vary, but I like to keep busy. I have my large project running in the back ground, so if theres not alot to do I can get on with that. But on a day to day basis I am getting taught skills to help me with my project and personal developement, helping the team out with their projects, and visiting other departments of the business.
Alot of responsibility, the project that I have been given could potentially effect the whole of Europe, as we edge towards merging our electricity market with the rest of Europe's. This could potentially change the market forever and make electricity much cheaper.
Above all I have become very confident in my abilities to run a project successfully on my own. Delivering and presenting my work and findings to the team and management. I feel as if I have strengthened my team work and communications skills.
The Company
Very calm and peaceful, everyone is very friendly and willing to help. You are not pressured by anyone, or expected to do anything for anyone. You can work at your own pace, but remember it is basically a three month interview. So make the most of it and you may be offered a job at the end.
Yes it was organised very well. The first three days I was sent for training, where I met all the other interns and got to know them. They take you out in the evenings to socialise. this was nice as I felt I already knew people when I started in the office. On the first day I was given my project, and a meeting was set up to introduce me to the team and the work they do. After the meeting I was given some research to get up to speed, and give me the knowlege needed too progtress with my project. At certain milestones I have meetings with HR to make sure that I am still enjoying the placement.
The internship is mainly based around developing you as a person more than the project they give you. The project feels like a way of testing your ability. But the training corses that you are sent on are about developing you as a person, from the way come across and act in the workplace to pesentation skills, team work and communication. You stay in very nice hotels on training corses and all travel and food is paid for.

Yes very appealing, I have managed to spend a lot of time with the other departments and have a good insight, which will help me choose a position that I can settle down in after finishing my studies.
The Culture
Yes, always been invited to the social events with the team. Every friday we leave sit to go and get lunch out. I go for lunch with the interns most on the other days of the time. I commute a few miles from work so dont socialise much after work.
I commute from home as it was only a 30minute drive so I can not give a educated answer to this question
