    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • My internship experience has been great, I have enjoyed very much. The company is great and established, but the team has been as a family for me. The culture of the firm is very strong and you can perceived to be valued and that everybody, starting from your managers to your colleague want to help you. The company also has organized very well this summer internship, as a matter of fact has organized a lot of events to help the intern to socialize. The balance between work and free time is incredibly good and therefore I have had the possibility to truly enjoy this experience

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • All the members of my team have always been very nice with me. They have really embraced the culture of the firm and were very open to help me every time no matter what I was asking ( i. e. they helped me with learning new things within the work environment but also helped me to visit the country and enjoy my spare time, giving me precious advices). My team strongly believed in me and gave to me tasks of real responsibility if I felt ready to bear it. Every time I have helped them they were very giving me recognition for what I have achieved and they were also proud of me.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • My managers and my stream heads have helped me a lot. Every time I was facing an issue they were happy to help. From issue with the authorization to use an internal software to external issue such open a bank account in a foreign country. My managers tried to help me when they discovered that at the beginning I was not very happy about my placement. In order to help me they have also allowed me to organize session with different members of the company in order to give me a broader view of what the company is doing.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • The workload was not to heavy. I was given very few tasks to accomplish and my skills were not used at the beginning. Things improved when I spoke with my managers regarding the situation and I were actively requesting for more pieces of work which I considered more suitable for me

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • More than expected! If I was asking for it my team was happy to give more responsibility to me. They were happy to give me work and I will always remember my first participation in a speech regarding a very serious issue, where I was required to report regarding a critical situation which I was in charged to analyse.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • My position was very particular and I didn't have so many possibilities to learn much about technical programme. Despite this without any doubt this internship has thought me a lot regarding how a huge multinational is run. Also I learned about the importance of the management roles and the importance of coordination among the different business parties. I gain a lot of precious insight regarding what I want to do in my future, and this is due to the fact that I was allowed to request tasks which I liked and given the many opportunity which the management gave me to spend time with other section of the business

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The atmosphere in the office is incredible. Everyone is very nice to me also even if I am just an intern. Being the office open space I am able to ask, not just with a personal message using the internal communication system, but in person any question directly to who is in charged. The organization within my team is great, and everybody is very prone to help the others with any kind of issue. The dialogue is open and the manager creates a very friendly environment, where you can speak without any fear about everything.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The internship set up was great for all the interns. The stream heads of the internship project also organized a lot of different activities to involve all the interns and to motivate everybody. The interns were given the opportunity to select in which division they would be assigned to, this system in theory is perfect, in practice was not working well for everybody, this is the reason why my grade is not the maximum. But the managers once have figured out the nature of the issue have tried to fix it.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • Is directly perceivable the effort that the firm is doing in order to form the interns. We are at the centre of a well thought project and this has been perceived by everyone. The company has invested in us since the final step of the assessment centre and not only monetary resources. As a matter of fact, all the interns were provided with a mentor which is coming from the graduate programme which spent time helping us. An example of how the Standard Life has invested in us, could be the fact that the company paid to all the intern a night out to improve the team spirit of all the interns and to make us understand the real culture of the firm.

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • The company invested in us also on this side. The stream heads of the intern programs organized a lot of events with the members of the graduate programme in order to give us a complete overview of our future possibilities within the organisation. We were informed both formally of the potential opportunity and also we were able to ask directly to who decided to stay in the organisation after the internship programme. For make clearer the situation also different types of meeting were organized for us: an example could be the session in which we met the most young senior managers of the company and they told us their stories. In the last two weeks also we are informed if the company will offer us a contract for the graduate scheme, this is going to depend on our performance during the internship.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • This is probably the most incredible part of my internship. 10 out of 10, outstanding. I would give a higher grade if is possible! The company provide all the interns, which need relocation, with an accommodation (incredibly good). The majority of the interns therefore were living very closed and these help a lot us to create a good social scene among us. As said also once the organization financed a night out to all the interns. Also the stream heads of the programme were always very interested in this aspect and have done everything needed to create a great environment.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Given the fact that the organisation provided us with the accommodation and that the office is very closed, our only expenses has been the food and other socialising experiences. We have spent our internship within a capital city, therefore maybe the cost of the life is higher than normal, but was not a problem. The diversity of clubs, pubs and locals allow everybody to select the lifestyle which feats it best.

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Our accommodation was in the city centre, and this helped a lot. The city is also well served by cabs and busses, but you can walk everywhere. The nightlife is very good, plenty of opportunity in one of the most beautiful city of Europe. You can enjoy all the different experiences you are looking for, from the cinema to clubs and everything is very closed.

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • The weather has not been perfect but all the outside activities were feasible without many problems. The organization actively promote a healthy lifestyle, and having a flexible time, all the interns have had the opportunity to do outdoor activities. There are a lot of parks in the city and this allowed us (all the intern as a group) to organized several activities as the weekly football match. The city also is incredible and we have had the possibility to explore it all walking.
