The Role
The work placement was very enjoyable, considering not much of my degree was applied within the operational analysis role I was appointed.
The team i was put in were very inviting and supportive knowing that this is the first proffesional job I have been in. Colleagues across Dstl are helpful when trying to coordinate different porjects and guided me in the right direction when necessary.
Unfortunatetly as managment goes, I was given the opportunity to explore projects related to my degree when I asked, however every effort was made to boraden my understanding of what Dstl does by being put on a wide range of projects.
How busy I was fluctuated massively depending on time; towards the end of the financial year the work load ramped up however some weeks not much work was needed to be done and therefore it was essential that I went out to find work.
The level of repsonsiblity provided to me was high which made me feel valued which correlated to a high morale boost. For each project I was entrusted with high level work which was essential to stakeholder understanding.
The skills developed will help massively when engaging with customers at a later date in my professional career, however it did not aid my university skill set.
The Company
The atmosphere was good as an open plan office gives people the opportunity to have 'screen breaks' and engage with fellow colleagues.
The placement was fairly well organised as I would take over from the previsous year in industry student, my team leader was very proactive in finding me new and exciting projects to work on.
The company invested a lot of money in personal development, from training courses in modelling software, to widening my understanding of the military.
Flexi Time
Subsidised Canteen
Subsidised/Company Gym
National Travel
Above 25 days holiday
Working from home
Fiarly appealing, however I think that when I reapply I would like to be in a role that involved more of my degree.
The Culture
In Dstl there is a new starters organisation that allows year in industries and graduates to socialise and get to know each other which was very useful.
Having lived in Portsmouth, the cost of living was about average.
There was no real nightlife in Portsmouth.
Yes there were plenty of activites to do both with work and outside of work, e.g. bouldering, airsofting
