The Role
I really enjoyed my internship with the Reading Internship Scheme (run by UoR). The organisation I worked with was excellent and the staff ensured that my skills were utilized properly.
I felt highly valued by my colleagues, who trusted me with a variety of important tasks. I always felt included within the office and was sad to leave as I felt I'd become a real part of the group during my time there.
I had a direct and indirect supervisor, both of whom provided strong guidance and support when required.
I was generally kept busy with engaging tasks, which I appreciated. There were days where I didn't have as much work, and where I had to find some of my own tasks to an extent- although this was explained to me previously, and was something I considered an element of professional employment.
I was given a large amount of responsibility, which I was very happy with. This involved various tasks, such as presenting to a number of corporate leaders or producing a number of important reports for example.
Whilst some of the tasks assigned to me reinforced my previous skills as opposed to developing new ones, I was still given an insight as to skills to develop- skills that can be put into practice during my degree studies.
The Company
Whilst there were days in which the office was very quiet, the majority of the time it was sociable- very helpful when the people sitting across from you were often key contributors as to one of your projects.
The internship was very well organised, with clear responsibilities provided and a good programme of work set.
The management were keen to ensure that I gained a strong awareness of the business operations, and the skills involved for certain areas. I was encouraged to attend conferences and meetings, for example, where I had the opportunity to contribute to discussions and develop my professional communication skills.
The management were very pleased with the work I produced and intoned that there would be possible employment opportunities available in the future- opportunities I would be happy to consider.
The Culture
Whilst there wasn't a 'social scene' as such due to the nature of the organisation, everyone was still very friendly and welcoming which helped make the internship worthwhile- I made good networks with people I hope to stay in contact with.
Reading is a typically expensive area, with a high cost of living. I got used to this during my university studies however, so this wasn't as much of a mitigating factor as it could have been for others with no previous experience of the area.
Reading has great nightlife, and this is reflected in the vast amount of pubs and clubs in the area- definitely a student town!
I was presented with countless opportunities to engage with during my time at the organisation- opportunities I really appreciated.
