About You
It was very enjoyable. Sitec has a dedicated training pack for Short term interns which is well tailored to match whatever current level you are on. You always have industry Design engineers around you to seek help and advice; They are always willing to pass on some knowledge and answer your queries. Pace of work is challenging but the pace is just right to ensure you are under pressure but learning also.
Very. You are throw straight into an office with industry professionals all working on a variety of projects. This really makes you feel part of the team and allows you to understand the different sections of the industry and how they fit and work together. I was also allowed to contribute to a range of different Ideas and concepts which was really empowering.
I was assigned a mentor to assist me throughout the duration of my placement and he was really helpful. What I like is that when you seek assistance for a problem, you are not given the solution, you are just placed on a different thought cycle or thinking pattern more appropriate to the problem. This is really helpful because promotes a deeper understanding of processes and develops the critical problem solving skills required to be a successful engineer.
The skills and experience I have picked up on this placement will be indispensable towards me excelling in my degree. I arrived here expecting to be given a few talks and try out a few new things however all the tasks have been as they would be if I was an industry engineer, I think it is this that has exceeded my expectations and prompted me to learn more proactively.
The Company
Structure is very good. The company have their own dedicated training pack which is excellent to get you up to speed. It can feel a bit daunting at first but after my mentor gave me a brief description of the tasks, I was able to kick off.
It's a very relaxed atmosphere, its pretty large office and you're allowed to listen to music through your headphones. It's quite at peak points when everyone is getting on with work but once it edges closer to lunch things get very lively. And half day on a friday so I'm out of the office by 1. =D
I had a great deal invested in in terms of the training made available to me, I was doing the training scheme that their engineers complete upon recruitment. But I wasn't there long enough to do a lot more.
Excellent because I was doing the job I would be doing if I were employed by the company, This gave me excellent insight. The other engineers also explained a lot to me regarding where an engineer fits in with the whole process and the different options available open to me once I'm in the company.
A huge amount, on my first day I was given a talking to about what the company does, the contracts it currently holds etc. Having spoken to other employees during my time at the company, the really broke things down well as to how the company operates.
It confirmed that this is what I want to do. This has given me a big lift and will add to my already high enthusiasm towards my degree.
Everything Else
I was not paid, it was voluntary,
Yes, everyday I took the opportunity to talk to individuals all throughout the company, even in departments not related to my degree. Other employees were always more than happy for me to approach them to talk about all things future and careers. This increased my networking confidence also.
There wern't any planned events as such as there were only two of us doing a placement. It was more off my own initiative to approach other employees and talk to them.
Yes. There are a lot of charity initiatives within the company and many planned social ventures. This is always good because it adds another dimension and excitement about coming to work.
Yes, especially if you are a first year Engineering degree student who would like to really make themselves stand out against others, this is the place you want to be!
