The Role
I was entrusted with the rare opportunity of line-managing a team of 18 operators in one of the highest value departments on site. Naturally due to the nature of the work and the level of responsibility I was given, I thoroughly enjoyed my placement year and would highly recommend Morgan as a placement/graduate employer.
The site where I was based was very tightly knit and therefore was a high level of recognition for the work that was being carried out.
Due to being placed into a management position I had a lot more freedom than what would normally be given to a placement student. However, whenever I required support and guidance it was readily available from all levels of the business.
From day to day I was very busy carrying out very varied tasks, however it was manageable.
After my fifth week on placement and due to changes in business needs I was asked to step up to the challenge of supervising a team of 18 operators and one of the highest value sales cells. I've never heard of a placement student being given so much responsibility! Whilst daunting to begin with, the entire year has proved totally invaluable for my personal development.
The personal development I have made this year will stand me in good stead for my final year at uni- with group work and presentations. Also, I have been on a few externally run people-management training sessions which will definitely prove beneficial in the future.
The Company
I was based on the shop floor on the factory, so naturally this is a very busy environment. However it was also a very relaxed environment in which you could easily engage with members of all levels of the business.
The Southampton site where I was based really believes in giving placement students and graduates a real go at a proper job, so it was quite well organised.
I am coming out of my placement a completely different person to when I started. I have developed no end personally. My confidence has improved dramatically and I am much more assertive. This amount of personal development has only come from being given a job where I have been entrusted with a huge amount of real respobility.
Company Parties/Events
If successful on the placement scheme you will be given an offer to progress onto the Morgan Graduate Leadershio Programme. I am keeping my fingers crossed for this fantastic opportunity.
The Culture
There was only one other placement student at the site, and three graduates. However, roughly once a month a large group of us would go out for meals and some drinks- this group included supervisors, engineers and senior management!
Accommodation in Southampton was probably slightly more expensive than you would expect, however socialising cost nothing out of the norm.
There are some great places in Southampton for a really good night out!
Every few weeks we would go out for a meal and drinks, on other occasions we went bowling but there could have been more organised.
