    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I really enjoyed my placement year at Lubrizol, all the projects gave me an opportunity to learn new aspects of the industry while improving engineering and personal skills. The atmosphere in the office was always positive and helpful and made the job very pleasant even on the most stressful days.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Throughout the placement I felt valued as I was given very interesting projects and my opinion was taken seriously.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • During the first weeks of placement I was given a thorough training by the previous student on projects and new software. During the year I have received the guidance I needed and was able to ask for support to all members of the team.

    5/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Overall, the workload was manageable in the normal work time. However, depending on the period of the year and the amount of projects and deadlines that were occurring, times when it was needed to work longer hours alternated with less busy days.

    4/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • From the beginning of the placement, it was understood that if I was willing to, I would have been given high responsibility. In the second half of the placement I was given the opportunity to run some projects by myself, while guidance was always available.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I am sure that all of the personal and engineering skills I have acquired during this year will help me with future jobs.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The atmosphere in the office was always very pleasant and it was possible to establish very good relationships with everyone in the team and in the rest of the company. For the whole year, I was sharing the office with 2 other employees with whom I created a good relationship that extended in activities outside work.

    5/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The placement was well organised from the very beginning, as the application and admission process was straight forward and most of all the response time was quick. The placement itself was meant to be divided into two 6 months internships in two different departments, but I had the opportunity to choose if I wanted to keep working in the same team for the whole 12 months.

    5/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • I had the opportunity to attend several training courses and workshops throughout the year.

    4/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Flexi Time

    Subsidised Canteen

    Sports and Social Club

    Company Parties/Events

    3/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • At the end of the placement, an event was organised to explain future possibilities within the company and several opportunities were available. This obviously depends on the demand of a specific year for new employees.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • I had the opportunity to participate in several events we organised between colleagues, both part of sports and social club and separate events.

    4/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • The area was North Derbyshire, the prices for food and social activities were generally the same as what I was used to during university.

    4/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • The nightlife of Derby is ok, depending on what you are looking for! Mainly nice bars and pubs, not many clubs.

    4/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • The sports and social club organised many different events, I personally took part mainly in the go-karting events with some colleagues. Outside of work we mainly organised dinners and nights out with colleagues.
