    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • It was a lot of work, but learned a lot so it was great.

    4/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I felt that in one project, I wasn't given important tasks, while in the other project I felt that they trusted me enough to help with some more relevant work.

    4/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • You're expected to do your own tasks so you're independent for the most part. If you need help, you try to schedule a meeting with an engineer or supervisor to get a few tips, but they don't babysit you.

    4/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Up and down, but you usually have just enough on your plate. Sometimes you're a bit too busy though...

    4/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I felt that in one project, I wasn't given important tasks, while in the other project I felt that they trusted me enough to help with some more relevant work.

    4/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • It was my first workterm dealing with projects, so it was definitely a great experience. Improved my communication skills, and learned a lot about the oil & gas industry from an operator's point of view.

    4/5

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • It was always busy, but people a good sense of humor which made the days pass by a bit easier.

    4/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • Very well structured program with the company.

    5/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • They trained me for going offshore, gave lots of safety and environmental training, got safety clothes (boots, coveralls, etc...) and even paid for a three-day trip across Canada to witness a vendor visit. They also tried hard to get me to visit offshore, but wasn't able to due to other reasons.

    5/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Subsidised Canteen

    Sports and Social Club

    National Travel

    Company Parties/Events

    4/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • It's a possibility. They hire many more co-ops than full-time engineers a year, so there's lots of competition.

    3/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Everybody was busy with their work, went out for group lunches once or twice but that was about it.

    2/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Small city, so it's relatively cheap.

    4/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • 0/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • A curling game once a week was a notable item, and a few things they did for fundraising.
