    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I thoroughly enjoyed my placement at Hewlett-Packard, it has allowed me develop hugely and gain skills that I wouldn't have been able to achieve at university.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I felt extremely valued from day 1, I have been give huge responsibilities over the year and I have never been treated as an equal individual rather than an intern.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • Throughout my placement I have always had several managers that have been there to give me any support or guidance that I have needed. Everyone has been very approachable and my managers have always been keen to improve my development.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • The workload can vary a lot based on the time of year and the types of projects that are going on, I have had extremely busy periods and slightly less busy times. But I have always had something significant to work on

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was given a lot more responsibility than I expected and I have had the opportunity to lead many large projects which have had very significant outcomes.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I don't think my skills learnt will relate directly to my degree but I definitely think that it will allow me to focus on my studies when I return and make me more determined to achieve a high degree classification.

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Everyone was very welcoming and approachable, if I ever had any problems there was always someone in the office that I could go to for help.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The placement was very well organized, I had regular staff meetings with my managers and we also had staff meetings with all the current Interns and Graduates in the departments. The only downside to this was that it was hard to differentiate the interns from the Graduates at times, it was at times difficult to understand where the interns fitted into this particular team.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • There was a lot of training to undergo, most of the training was done 1:1 with your direct managers as this was the easiest way to learn on the job,

  • I am very interested in applying back to HP to the Graduate scheme,

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Yes there is a very large intern community at HP with lots of regular social events, there was also a good social scene within my department.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?

  • Reading was a good place to out with work colleagues.

  • Yes there were a large number of charity events going on.
