The Role
It has been an incredible experience working with pupils in the highlands and raising awareness of HIV and AIDS as the biggest humanitarian crisis in the world today
All staff and volunteers I have worked with have made me feel very valued and welcomed at all stages of my internship
I had fantastic support from my direct manager and from all the Youth and Schools Team here in Scotland.
I chose to work four days a week but in the end faciliated workshops most days. I took time in lieu if necessary to take a rest and re-energise
This program of humanitarian education was given to me to coordinate and manage from start to end culminating in a Public awareness activity in the town centre with school pupils making a human red cross and human red ribbon. This featured on MFR radio and in three newspapers. It is also found on You Tube.
Not only did I learn First Aids skills, Emergency Response skills, administration skills, managing and coordinating workshops, presentation skills but I also learnt how to use the Red Cross fundamental Principles to be a better person
The Company
Relaxed, enjoyable and supported
Very well put together. The intern induction and humanitarian education training was useful and very valuable.
The Red Cross put me through two external courses; Swift Water Rescue and RYA2 Powerboat training course, took me to Belfast to meet other emergency services, joined the emergency scenario course at Carbisdale, paid for me to attend the Youth and Schools meeting, Welcome workshop in London, Hum Ed training weekend in Glasgow, and three courses; safeguarding children, child protection and function in centres. It has surpassed my expectations with regards to opportunities to develop

Working from home
I have applied for a position and am hopeful of gaining employment. I have been able to speak to other staff on how best to further my skills and experience which has been very helpful
The Culture
I paid to stay in a hostel my manager recommended which charged 45 GBP each week but after one month moved into a colleagues home with her family and was charged 30 GBP each week as contribution towards food. Living in Inverness has been incredible; having Aviemore so close with outdoor activites, highlands and rivers and lochs to explore and nightlife is wonderful
Varied and interesting
Its down to you how much effort you put in but the opportunities are all there
