    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • Not always something to do, but everything I did was interesting and genuinely useful or worthwhile. I was made a real part of the team, and not just someone to delegate the less enjoyable tasks to. My understanding of business culture and work ethic have both grown exponentially as a result.

    5/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • As previously stated I was made to feel a genuine member of the team. I was never belittled or made to feel like my input was not relevant, in fact some of my own ideas were taken forward and used in projects of my own extending outside of my own team. I was sincerely thanked for my work at one point by someone working in another country, which given we had never even met was something I greatly appreciated. It gave a sense of satisfaction that made the hard work worthwhile.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • Help was available whenever I needed it and I was given feedback every 3 months suggesting actions for further development. I notice the change within myself when I think back to the way I thought and acted at the start of my placement and compare it with now. The change has extended beyond the professional environment and I am generally a more organised and calculating person- I feel more resourceful and I make less mistakes.

    5/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Most days I would have enough work to take me through the whole day without ever being overwhelmed, however as with most work environments this was not 100% consistent and there was at least one day per month where I would be very busy all day, or slightly bored. This is the nature of the job however, and cannot be blamed on my employer in my own eyes.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • With the exception of checks and input on more difficult matters from my mentor, my work was my own. At one point I was asked a question by a colleague that revealed an opportunity for improvement in a report which was my own responsibility. Over the next 3 months I greatly improved said report to the point that I was personally thanked by the recipient for my efforts at the end, all with little to no input from any of my supervisors.

    4/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • My work ethic is greater than it has ever been, as are my organisational skills- I have a list for everything and I always know what needs to be and what I am able to begin, even with mundane every day tasks. I have more free time because I am more efficient when I do work, something I expect to help in my final year to no end. My professional communication skills are leaps and bounds better than they were, and I am able to handle issues assertively and with none of the stigma associated with students being taken advantage of.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The work environment was an open one, with no cubicles but still more than enough personal space. My colleagues were a genuine joy to be around and I was happy to see them each morning. I integrated into the team immediately and was always invited to any social events- I am even due to attend the wedding reception of one of my colleagues in the summer, despite the fact I will have left placement by then. If nothing else does, then this proves to me that these people are genuinely my friends and not just people I have worked with.

    5/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The placement included a handover with my predecessor to ensure I was fully capable of the job, and I was always sure of what I was doing thanks to the guidance of those around me. My supervisor personally introduced himself to me before we were due to formally meet, and it was touches like this that made the transition from student to employee that much easier.

    5/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • I attended numerous training courses to aid my development, none of which were compulsory- these were recommended for my benefit and not to meet quotas. Many of them taught skills which I have found myself applying since finishing them, both in and out of work and I don't believe a single one of them was wasted time.

    5/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Flexi Time

    Sports and Social Club

    Subsidised/Company Gym

    Company Parties/Events

    Staff Sales/Staff Shop

    Above 25 days holiday

    4/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • I would love to return to the company, and I know that my predecessor was a the front runner for a graduate position on my section from the moment she appeared on the list of applicants. Placement students are remembered and it's highly likely that were I to reapply for the company I would be hired. I also know of other students on sections with positions opening up that have already been offered a job, so the prospects can be even greater than my own.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • There were organised social events amongst all placement and graduate students, with the same people attending each time. This helped us to get to know each other and feel more relaxed and part of a group.

    4/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Living in Newcastle, I was used to the area as a Northumbria University student, so I knew things would be excellent. Because the plant is located a distance from both Newcastle and Sunderland, there will always be travel costs whether, running costs of a personal vehicle or public transport fees but the wage we are paid makes this more than affordable.

    4/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Student nightlife in Newcastle- speaks for itself.

    5/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • There were a few different events I was invited to over the course of the year, however my unfamiliarity with the other participants made them slightly daunting.
