    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I absolutely loved it! You have as many responsibilities as a permanent employer, with your ideas being fully considered and implemented. It is also really good to be part of such a large intern group (~50 interns). This means that you still have the out of work lifestyle of a student, while gaining experience and skills.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • It took a little while to settle in, as my team hadn't had an intern before. But gradually as they knew me and my capabilities they continued to pass over additional tasks to me and projects that I could own. Now as it comes towards the end of the year, people come to me for opinions/information, which they trust and use in their own work. I feel massively part of the team and will be sad to leave!

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I was given support, but not necessarily by my manager, and it was more of a case of learning as you go. I learnt a lot more from my colleagues, who I took responsibilities and tasks from, as the support came along with teaching the tasks. I was guided with setting targets/goals for each quarter by my manager, and they helped me assess them as the quarter progressed.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • To begin with I had very little, as my role was new so all of my tasks hadn't been fully scoped out. As this progressed I became incredibly busy, which resulted in an additional staff member taking on some easier tasks so i could focus on influencing and building processes. The extent of how busy I am varies, largely because I'm in finance and because of the cycle, but I'm never quiet, which suits me.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • A lot!! I helped design some key new process that will be used for years, as well as testing the new systems for Finance. I've taken part in projects external to my team and taken over large chunks of work from my colleagues. There are certain areas that I am the only person to be working on/with those tools, and therefore I have a large amount of responsibility.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • The time management and motivation will definitely help me study in final year. Hopefully this will help me achieve the deadlines well in advance! Other than that all skills learnt have set me up for life and any other job I apply for. These include project management, teamwork, analytical skills, communication, excel skills, presentation etc

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Intel generally is very laid back and has an open door policy, so you can approach anyone. This makes it easier to work with colleagues and managers, without being worried about being a nuisance (important as a new intern!!) There are monthly and quarterly Q-Do's where the whole teams goes off site for lunch/an activity, which everyone enjoys. There are regular team dinners out or karaoke nights for fun. Everyone is very welcoming and easy to work with!

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • Hard to comment as I didn't really know what to expect. My role was scoped out, and they knew who I was reporting to, so no issues. Across the board they keep reassessing you, so you can take on more work/projects if you're capable and have the time. I didn't have any issues, probably because of the number of interns they welcome each year.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • There is a scheme called My Learning, where you have to take training. Some classes such as 'presentation skills' or 'controls' are compulsory, others you can join if you choose. There is a huge range and it is completely up to the individual if you want to attend or not.

    Subsidised/Company Gym

    Financial Bonus

    Company Parties/Events

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Very! The salary is good, plus you still get all of the benefits listed above. It is also incredibly appealing to come back into a firm you already know. Although it would be into a different team, at least you already have some form of network and know what the company is about.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • A large social scene mainly due to there being ~50 placement students. There were always events on, for example cinema trips, nights out, trips to different cities etc On top of this there were monthly and quarterly Q-Do's where all of the colleagues would go out together. There was also the Christmas party and varies leaving/joining do's

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Very low. Houses prices are lower than Bristol, and general cost of living in Swindon is low. This is good as the salary for Intel isn't high, however as the cost of living is lower it is relative to the area and spending power is the same as it might be at other companies with a higher salary.

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Swindon doesn't have the largest amount of social options, but with the large number of interns and grads, there's a lot of people to go out with which makes up for it. There are only 2 clubs, but the large network from Intel makes up for that! The number of places to eat out at is also good, with a huge range of individual restaurants as well as chains, with none of these being ridiculously expensive. A new cinema and food court has just opened up as well!

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Some but now many. The Interns had a sport and societies committee that organised football and netball teams, but little else. At the start of the year, a lot of nights out were organised, but as people's jobs and commitments to work and uni work increased this amount decreased. Intel do have network called 'Great Place To Work' which organise events at a reduced cost eg music concerts, beer tasting, entertainment at work
