During my 10 weeks at Unilever, I worked on ‘Unaccounted Waste’. Unaccounted waste at Purfleet is waste that is generated but not currently explained by factory systems. Unaccounted waste accounts for 30% of the overall waste produced on the Purfleet factory and is currently worth around €800 000 per annum. In tackling the problem of unaccounted waste, I had to analyse the process by monitoring and measuring waste at different stages of the operation in order to find out the key reasons for the production of unaccounted waste and provide solutions to minimise the waste produced. The project requires close work with Production, Quality, Finance and a number of other teams on site, to cumulate data towards reaching the project aim, as well as problem solving and creative thinking skills. The work done was a mix of office based data analysis and a lot of factory visits.
