    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • The placement was very enjoyable, I worked with a large group of people across several departments including other placement students. The work I had to do was very interesting both theoretically and practically.

    5/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I was very impressed that all placement students at Cummins are treated as though they are full-time engineers not "just" students. This meant that fellow colleagues often asked for my opinion on different projects and took my ideas seriously which made me feel valued.

    5/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I had weekly one-on-ones with my supervisor and everyone I met within the company was happy to help me if I required assistance with anything.

    5/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I was kept busy with meaningful tasks almost all the time. If I did not have enough to be getting on with, and raised the issue with my supervisor my workload was reassessed promptly.

    5/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • It was really nice to receive the same amount of responsibility as a full-time graduate engineer. I worked on real projects presenting to suppliers and customers as well as senior management within Cummins which was nerve-wracking but ultimately rewarding.

    5/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • This is hard to define at the moment as I have not yet returned to my University course. However I have learnt a lot about theory of materials, engine design and thermodynamics which I am sure will be incredibly useful come my 3rd and 4th year.

    4/5

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Very open and friendly. Colleagues were happy and willing to help with projects as well as engaging in small talk.

    5/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The placement was very well organised, the HR team at Cummins provided help at every stage and it has run completely smoothly.

    5/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • We were trained in all the company software as well as formal technical report and engineering standard writing. I also took part in FORTE communication training and Introduction to Six Sigma which were both interesting whilst on placement and will prove to be beneficial for my career in general.

    4/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Flexi Time

    Sports and Social Club

    Subsidised/Company Gym

    Company Parties/Events

    4/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • I would love to have the job I currently do at Cummins (Mechanical Development Engineer) as a permanent graduate position. The opportunities within Cummins seem to be huge with a variety of departments and business units both within the UK and globally.

    5/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • There are a large number of placement students at Cummins Daventry so there was a very good social scene there involving go-karting, paintballing, meals out as well as nights out. The company promotes the idea of teams going out together, my department has been out for several meals together with plans for summer including going to the races and go-karting.

    5/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • I think the cost of living was low considering the fact that this is a paid placement. I rented a one-bed flat with my partner for £430 a month. I believe other placement students who shared houses found it very affordable.

    5/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • I am not a big party-goer but a lot of the other placement students have enjoyed the nightlife in Daventry, Rugby, Northampton and Leamington Spa.

    3/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • IMechE lectures were advertised widely at work. There are also opportunities for go-karting, paintballing and more.
