    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • My line manager organised a good mix of interesting and fun activities. Some days were more quiet/boring but that was to be expected as an intern.

    4/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Very valued. The whole team was very friendly and treated me like a proper member of the team, going above and beyond to show me the company. I was there for two team days which felt very familiar and friendly. I'll genuinely miss my colleagues.

    5/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • My line manager was very supportive throughout the internship and went out of his way to make it a good experience for me. However, I didn't feel this was unanimous amongst the interns and it was luck of the draw how helpful your line manager was. Since your line manager made such a big impact on your overall eperience, I feel they could have been given more guidance and help from the central HR team.

    4/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Very mixed depending on the day. If something was planned for the day e.g. a farm visit or team day, it felt a very busy and productive day. However, there would be two or three days a week where I was doing very little. I would suggest anyone doing this internship take the initiative to find work to do. (Unless of course you like the idea of getting paid to read BBC news!)

    2/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • Obviously in a company like Tesco where you're constantly dealing with numbers in the millions, they would be foolish to let you run the show. However, you're free to do a lot off your own back as long as you keep people closely updated and are willing to have help/supervision.

    4/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • We had one specific development day for the interns which taught me skills which I imagine I will use throughout my career. On top of this the everyday business and IT skills I acquired will be priceless in my next job. I study Maths at University so very little will be directly applicable to my degree but if you're studying a business related course I imagine you will learn a lot.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • A good mixture of professional and friendly. You could happily chat to people about things other than work and wear headphones if you wanted to. However, the building itself was not very nice for Group Food - you would expect Tesco to be able to afford better!

    3/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • Again this very much depended on your line manager and so it could have been organised a lot better centrally.

    3/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • Quite substantially, we had one intern development day and people from all over the company gave me their time to explain their part in the business. It definitely felt like the internship was set up as a precurser to the grad scheme and they hoped you would come back (if they liked you).

    4/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Flexi Time

    Subsidised Canteen

    Financial Bonus

    4/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Very appealing, I have a friend in the grad scheme and he seems to be enjoying it a lot. They will give you a job at the end if you've done well over the 10 weeks

    4/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • No. Very little was organised centrally and people, at least in the area I was in, did not seem keen to meet up after work. However, the are a lot of other interns if you're all willing to make the effort and it's nice to have some friendly faces for lunch.

    2/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • I was living at home but the area is reasonably expensive. If you haven't been out in Herts you should know it has the prices of London and the social scene of an old people's home.

    2/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • I've grown up in the area and can tell you it's very very bad. The only real option is to travel into London and accept you're not really going to be able to get home.

    3/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • There were but you had to really look for them.

    4/5
