The Role
Started off quite slow as they weren't as prepared for my arrival as I had expected, however once the placement was underway, it was enjoyable, and I learnt a lot. I was able to put into practice theory I had learnt at university, and would recommend the placement to anyone who wants to further their professional development.
The people there were generally nice, and they had a rich student body, so it was nice to work with professionals and students.
Wasn't as good as I had expected, however I would recommend anyone who takes a placement to try to initiate some sort of guidance/support system informally with their line manager, as this procedure wasn't in place for me and had I been a bit more thoughtful, would have done what I have recommended earlier, as I think this would have personally benefited me.
Near the beginning of the placement, there was little to do, and towards the end I found myself rushing to try to get everything completed to an appropriate standard. This was again, because they weren't as prepared for my arrival as I thought they would have been. Even with this problem, I still found I learnt a lot during the experience and would thoroughly recommend it to anyone.
I was given responsibility over my project, which meant I could go whatever way I wanted with it. This was good for me and I enjoyed this aspect.
Learnt skills which I had learnt about at university, and anticipate using these skills in the future.
The Company
It was a relatively quiet office, however, there was occasionally friendly conversation, lots of Unilever treats around, and generally well set out.
The actual placement was good, however, as mentioned previously, in the first few weeks, there wasn't much to do.
I think some colleagues contributed more than others, and I was able to learn HPLC very well with this company, however in terms of my approach to my work, and general development, I was not given much direction. This however is entirely a fault of the company, but I would encourage anyone who takes up a placement to play an active role in inquiring about their own development.
Working from home
Made contacts within the company and have gained lots of skills necessary.
The Culture
Not bad at all! Cheapish accommodation, and nice quiet town.
Didn't really go out but heard it was OK!
Didn't have that much time!!
