Role Description

Perform trouble-shooting analysis; provide resolution of application issues, and escalation if required. Perform on-call duties on a rotation basis in support of applications running on UNIX systems, server based applications, and basic system/data infrastructure. Monitor performance of systems and applications to ensure system availability and perform standard preventative maintenance. Understands the Technical Support area as it relates to assigned projects/tasks.

1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?

The job was excellent and provided an opportunity to get involved in a fast paced working environment, working on dynamic projects which were actually implemented in a live, production environment.


2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?

As a trainee I expected to not be valued but I was wrong. I became a part of the team and was given high responsibility tasks from colleagues.


3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?

Support was always given if required, but what i thought was the best part of the placement was being given the responsibility to tackle jobs on my own.


4. How busy were you on a daily basis?

Most days were busy, with new tasks always popping up to be completed. No day was ever the same, and there was always variety.


5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?

Lots of responsibility from the off were i was given my own projects to complete, these ranged from designing and manufacturing parts to installing new systems.


6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?

I believe the skills I have learnt will greatly benefit my future. My presentation and communication skills have vastly improved. I've gained a practical knowledge of manufacturing were I have seen real world applications of the theory learnt during my degree.


The Organisation

7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?

The atmosphere within my department was great, good team spirit and plenty of banter.


8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?

The internship was set up very well with the first week spent in the Learning and Development center learning the fundamentals of toyota. Several further training courses were set up through the year and quarterly reviews were undertaken to monitor progress.


9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?

There has been a lot of time put into training and development from Toyota. Courses were enjoyable and engaging and covered all non technical aspects that were required.

11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?

i would definitely come back as a graduate. I have had my placement extended another 6 weeks to take me up to going back to university. So i hope the chances are high.



12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?

We would often have social events with both placement and graduate students. Derby night life was fairly good.


13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?

Houseing was much cheaper than i was used to in oxford.


14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?

Night life was good, lots of bars and clubs and normally busy.


15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?

There were plenty of opportunities to go for drinks and dinner after work. There was also the opportunity to attend a soccer training session.
