The Role
Every day is different. Every day brings its own challenges and rewards.
All my colleagues were welcoming and friendly and as my placement progressed, I was asked about my methods and knowledge of equipment and treated like an employee.
Whenever I needed help I could contact my supervisor who would assist me. Anyone in the department was willing to help me with both work and personal problems.
The work load varies from day to day. As the placement progressed the workload increased as well as the responsibility. A good work life balance was attainable with the workload.
I have full control of my project and get input from my supervisors / management. As the placement progressed, I gained more responsibility.
I've developed both lab skills and skills that have helped me develop as an individual: communication skills being the most developed due to the amount of different people / departments who I have had to work with during my placement.
The Company
There is a balance between a work environment and being able to have a friendly chat which was achieved in my office. Overall a great atmosphere to work in, whatever day it was!
On our first day, we were given an agenda for the following few weeks. The first day in the department, I was given my placement goals and initial reading / training that was required. I was given details of who to contact for any issues.
Social events were organised to help the interns meet. These were great for team building and they carried on throughout the placement time.

Reviews are conducted throughout the year to assess how you are progressing. At the end of the internship it will be decided if you are recommended for hire or not. If the company is recruiting, then there is a chance for a job after the internship.
The Culture
There was a fairly large group of interns and we would all socialise together: we planned trips abroad and across the UK as a group of interns. Colleague-wise, offsite events are planned for us to socialise.
Living in Newcastle, so about average prices for the UK. Lots of student / professionals housing.
Very good nightlife. Lots of student deals throughout the week and weekend. Vast choice of places to go and there is somewhere for everyone!
The sports and social club at work offer many activities, ranging from horse riding, to kayaking and gardening. The onsite gym also offers exercise classes such as metafit.
