The Role
It was great, I also did a year in industry with the same company prior to my summer placement and feel I did at least the same amount of work in a fraction of the time!
I felt extremely valued. I did my placement with the team I was in for a year prior so they knew me really well. Because of this they were able to give me work that pushed my abilities. I was given more strategic work.
To be honest not much but that was only because I did well on my tasks. They were always there to report back to and ask questions though.
I have improved my soft skills brilliantly along with presentation skills communication skills etc. I'm now confident in my ability at university, knowledge of the subject being my only weak spot. This was where the placement wasn't so great, it was not directly related to my degree.
It was as structured as I needed it to be. My line manager tailored my tasks to my abilities.
Great since my team all knew me even though I was working at a different location. They're very encouraging towards students at Dstl. My time was fab.
The Company
It was great since I had already made friends at Dstl in my year in industry I already knew many people from across Dstl. Also at Dstl they actively encourage students to get involved in many things like trials and conferences.
Very well organised they've obviously set up many student summer placements in the past. The only hold up was myself finding out when my last exams were and stuff so I could start. Also I had to cut short my placement in order to return to university but I had no problems.
Very much so, I was actively encouraged to pursue work projects that were in line with my degree. And go on conferences where I could learn more about Dstl and how things worked . Also when I needed help with writing my CV for example my work colleagues would happily sit down with me. Dstl have sponsored me through my degree.

Good. I've got an interview with Dstl after I finish my degree .
The Culture
There was indeed. The site I was working at had quite a high number of 'young people' so I made many friends.
Alright. As cheap as you can expect in the south.
Very good. I lived in the student part of Portsmouth so there was plenty to do.
There were a few sports teams. I joined the netball summer league in the local area with people from work. Also there were many things like festivals on in Portsmouth at the weekends.
