    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I thoroughly enjoyed my placement, as was given responsibility straight away. Everyone welcomed me and was more than willing to explain things to me and guide me through the processes involved in different parts of insurance. The ability to see different departments meant I was able to gain a broad understanding of the Insurance, as I had never realised the scale and complexities. I was given help and assistance along the way, which meant the work I was given was always valued and relevant.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I felt very valued as after learning how things worked was able to contribute and give back to the company by reducing others workloads, writing policies and always being invited to attend more senior meetings. Throughout my placement people always assisted me with learning different steps and then thanking me for the work that i then did for them.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I had a line manager who had drawn up a weekly guide as to what I would be doing the meetings/ insights I would be having which gave a lot of structure to my placement. Additionally I then had a Buddy who was a graduate in the office and he guided me which was really benefically as he gave great advice from his time with the company. Also the HR team had days where we could go and talk to other graduates, see what role they were in and what they thought. This was great and really helped me to decide that Allianz was the right company for me as give a great deal of support and advice along the way.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Obviously days differ, however mostly I always had work to do, if i didnt I would go and help other departments who were always willing to give me work or let me sit in on meetings. I was never given too much work and worked 9-5 . Having the plan from my line manager of what I was doing each week really helped, so work was structured. As I moved around I did go and help departments I had already worked in when the other was quieter.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • As I stated in my first answer, a lot! Which was brilliant I always had actual work to do and was able to write new business which was really exciting. Being given the ability to contact brokers, work out premiums and renewals was brilliant, it really made me feel valued and responsible.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I did my internship at the end of my degree so in the summer of third year. I was offered a job at the end of it and started 2 weeks later. However through my time at Allianz on my internship I developed a lot of skills and was given brilliant training along the way, crucial to anyones further development. It made me realise the depth to insurance and from the internship helped me to decide that it was what I wanted to do.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The general atmosphere was friendly but hardworking, everyone was very kind and helpful but obviously work was the main thing. However duing my time one of the England World Cup games was on, everyone was allowed to finish early and watch the game in one of the conference room. This showed me that although it was serious work it had a great atmosphere and team spirit.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • It was exceptionally well organised, I had a detailed plan week by week so that I knew what I would be doing. In addition to this the HR team used to organise events for us to attend with the interns and days to get to know the graudates and learn from them. I was given a brilliant overview of commercial insurance.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • They invested a lot in us, although my placement was only 9 weeks everyone would take time to have meetings with me to explain their roles or to show me how do undertake certain processes. Also the insight days to the graduate program showed me how much further they would invest in me once I began the graduate program. It really showed me that Allianz puts a lot of time, effort and money into the development of their staff, something that i havent seen from many other companies.

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Well I am now on the Allianz Graduate scheme to very! The graduate scheme is the next step up from the internship and they devote a lot of time and effort into getting you into the right role, ensuring the correct training and development are given and helping you along the way. Having only been on the graduate program for 7 weeks already I feel valued and am given work to test my abilities yet can always recieve assistant if required.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • I was in the Southampton office and the only intern, however my graduate buddy and I would go out with a few other employees and although they were older it was really good. The interns arrange nights to meet up and go out which was good, although being in southampton it was harder than me, but i didnt really feel that I had missed out.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Fairly low being in Southampton which was where I had gone to university so knew where to go and etc. I was paying cheap rent and socialising is dependant on how much you enjoy going out. All I shall say is that the pay easily covered the cost of living, although its not the highest paid internship I am so glad that I did it!

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Well Southampton so usually full of students, however was summer so was quieter however we went on a big night out for my leaving drinks which was great. Also went to Clapham with some of the other interns, obviously busier and better night life due to being near London etc.

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • There were some, i was invited to a day out at a theme park and then to a pub however was unfortunately unavailable. Due to the small nature of the Southampton office there werent many arrnaged by the company. However at Guildford - the head office there are more opportunites.
